Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I classic skied mid-morning in Superior today. The conditions were wonderful. The tracks were firm and fast and the sun slightly softened up the tracks, just enough to allow for great skiing. There was very little debris on the blue, green and red trails. Someone must've picked up some of the debris since yesterday, because there was very little on the trails and it didn't hamper my skiing at all. A beautiful bluebird sky, very little wind and 30° temperature made my 100th ski of this season even more fun.

Excellent skate skiing between about 10 AM and noon. Very icy early on but when the sun hit the trails they softened a bit. Great skiing along side the groomed skate deck as well. You could go anywhere! This report is for the trails accessed via the south parking lot. Nothing like April skiing... Geese overhead and Robin singing!

Firsthand: Classic Secondhand

We classic skied Superior and stuck to the red today because it was so firm or icy. They groomed yesterday and are off today and Friday. The classic tracks were well formed, but a mix of glare ice or crusty snow with lots of sticks, bark, and other ski stopping debris. The skate deck was not ice, but it was solid with barely an edge. I would wait to classic here until it softens and even then the debris will be an issue.

I classic skied Superior this afternoon. The snow and freezing rain did wonders for the trails!! Most of the trails were groomed and tracked and the skiing was tremendous! My skin skis were amazing! Groomers packed down the snow beautifully, so skiing was fast and fun. There was very little ice. The classic tracks were deep and solid. The skate deck was very solid and was very fast. I jumped on the skate deck a few times and it seemed to be perfect for skating. We had up to 60-mph winds last night, so there is debris on the trails in the usual areas. It did not interfere with my classic skiing, however. You could either go over some of the smaller debris or around the larger debris. There were at least six very large trees that had blown down on the trails. The groomer had a chainsaw and removed all of the large trees from the blue, red and green trails. I don't believe he got out to the outer purple or yellow trails for tree removal.

The groomers were out in full force today on the Superior Municipal Forest trails, as usual. As of this report, they had groomed most of the trails and were working on tracking the trails. I skate skied this morning for 10 miles. The first 8-miles were great, but during the last 2-miles the snow started getting pretty soft. There is still plenty of snow, but the air temperature was a bit too warm today as the noon hour approached. It should be a great week to ski. Grooming plans: They will also groom Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, but have Thursday and Friday off. If you want to ski in Superior, I would suggest getting out there before Saturday.

Ski trails were fantastic again today. Groomed earlier in the day, it just incredible skiing in Superior. Thanks again to the groomers and commitment to these trails from the city. It's been an amazing winter skiing here-so much great snow, great grooming and great skiing! It's easy to see that many enjoy it on a daily basis, as day after day I've seen the parking lot full (after work) and the evidence of many daytime skiers! Thanks! Hope we get a couple more weeks yet!

I finally skied the yellow loop for the first time in two years! What a blast that trail is, lots of hills and incredible, silent scenery. The snow is holding up great on the yellow loop. The skate deck is crunchy and fast. It was hard for me to get traction on my kick, but it made it that much more challenging. The track for classic is non-existent on the yellow loop: don't let the first 100 feet of track make you think otherwise; it disappears quickly! Under some of the pines, there are some icy spots, but I think if you've skied the Muni before, you have come to expect this in the spring. However, these icy spots are easily passable and shouldn't prevent you from getting out there and enjoying this excellent trail segment.

I finally skied the purple loop! It was the first time all season, sadly. I skied the big purple loop and the snow was soft, wet, and very fast for skate. I loved it! Underneath the pine trees there's variable conditions: sometimes it's icy, sometimes it's soft snow that you'll sink up to your ankle in, and sometimes it's a puddle. All of these spots underneath the pine trees can easily be passed. I love this type of snow for cross country skiing because you can take big long strides and glide for quite a distance. The purple loop is in great shape, and unless there's a ridiculous amount of warming up all at once, it's going to last for a while longer in this state!

The red trail was in good condition. A few spots were water is coming through but easy to get around. Was out around noon and the skate deck was in great condition for this time of year. The sunny spots were slower but the trail was fast. I could hear the groomer on a different trail. Thanks for the great grooming!
