Reports 34 to 43 of 44    Month: Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Saturday, January 6, 2024
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Winter is back baby! Ironwood received about 3 inches overnight and we were in town for the canceled Sisu race, now a Sisu fest. Trails were soft with some wet spots and grass poking up. Otherwise it's pretty good. Nice to be in the real stuff!

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
We had 11 of us out farming snow from the woods and the trail edge this morning. We covered 3 km of trail with moderate terrain. The groomers rolled out another 7 km for a total of 10 km of skiable snow which will be open at 10 am tomorrow, Friday. The 3 km should ski well, the other 7 k may be thin under the pines.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
ABR opened today after receiving 6 inches of new snow Monday on top of almost bare ground and rain last weekend. Full coverage in places, lots of grass poking through, and one spot of bare dirt. Undulating bumpy terrain testing the ABCs: agility, balance, and coordination! Good for my first ski, but definitely not "race ready." (Reference to SISU Ski Fest coming Jan 6).

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
We received about 6 inches of snow Sunday night and Monday. We had two groomers out most of the day, rolling trails and then grooming the smoothest 10 km route on the main trails. With current temps below zero the groomed trails should set up nicely. Grooming plans: The groomers will be back out tomorrow getting the trails ready for a Wednesday morning opening! Don't forget to register for the Friday 4:30 wax clinic/discussion with Eli Brown (details on our website).

Very happy I rented skis with ABR. Lots of Nordic groups out. As one skier put it, it's like Forest Gump said about chocolate. You never now what your going to get! Good patches of snow. Some bare spots and some rocks...

Lots of happy skiers at ABR today. Over 21k groomed for skate skiing and some tracks were also set this morning. Good skiing mixed with rock skiing.

Nice to get on natural snow. Trail conditions ranged from good to bare ground. Morning snow was a bit harder to navigate than softer afternoon snow. Lots of dodging rocks, patches of grass, etc. Thanks ABR for grooming in tough conditions! But probably not worth the trip until new snow arrives.
