Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

The city regroomed this afternoon and the trails are resurrected. There is still a bit of debris but nothing like it was yesterday. It's still only groomed as far as H.

Open up to H, then cut over to K. Fast skating lane and good classic track throughout, pretty fast conditions, lots of pine needles down in sections, but great conditions, thanks to the awesome grooming.

[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Lester is only open to H-K. There is a ton of debris on several sections and all of the trail has some on it. I would not use anything better than B skis, and be prepared for them to randomly grab on you. I had a couple of tumbles as one of my skis would randomly stop. It sure is pretty out there, though.

[ Good skis ]
Conditions range from good to fair. You definitely don't want to be out there with kick wax on your skis. Trails are littered with twigs and needles. The classic track is still solid in some spots, drifted over and skied in in other places. The system is only groomed as far as H.

[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
I skied classic this afternoon from the lower parking area. The tracks are still well-defined with just a few sections drifted in but, as others have noted, there was a fair amount of debris especially on the ascent from the lower area to "A". It's nearly all twigs and needles. I used my good skis but B skis might have been a better choice. The skating lane was good also. Definitely worth the trip!

Up to H was groomed. Surprisingly good skiing, hardly any of the trail was blown out. Hard-packed and sturdy. Some debris on the trail, but just minor sticks and pine needles, still good for race quality skis.

Skied Lester this afternoon. Conditions below H are good with the new snow and grooming from last week. Thank you to the volunteers who have cleared the brush and most of the downed trees on the Loop above H. It is ready to be piston bully groomed except for a couple trees up by I. Lights were not all on. The Lester Amity Chalet is now open everyday. Come and warm up by the fire. Remember to buy a MN ski pass before skiing City of Duluth trails.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
A fine, light snow was falling when we hit the trail at dusk, giving the trails a nice dusting. The tracks are holding up well. The system is only groomed to the H intersection, and the only side loop that is groomed is D. The lights were not working above A when we were there, and I had forgotten my headlamp, so the last few downhills were extra exciting.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
A good chunk of the main loop is open. As others have mentioned, take the H-K cutoff, or continue on for a little more adventure. There is ample thick base, but because of the storm there is a lot of debris and ice on the surface. We just need a few inches of snow to cover up the debris. I never felt like my skis would be damaged, but I still wouldn't pull out the good boards.
