Trail Detail
Notes
This is a remote trail that is groomed by volunteers for classic skiing that goes thru jackpine forests, black spruce swamps and over glacial eskers. A skier will probably see more tracks of deer, wolves and moose that they will of other skiers. A snowshoe trail is also starts by the trailhead. Located two miles south of Hellman's Store on CR 44.Trail Reports

I skied this trail twice in two days, the conditions were so perfect. Temperatures were in the low teens, there was plenty of snow and though the trails were well used, they were not used up in any way. Downhills were smooth and doable for intermediate skiers and uphills were well tracked. I didn't see a soul except one pair of skiers hollering it up as they came down into a bog at the end of a run, blowing through the curve and landing with great glory and delight in the fluff at the bottom. It was impossible not to be having a great time up there. These are the trails to come to if you want to remember why you love cross country skiing, or if you want to be in the Boundary Waters but can't go quite that far. Impeccably groomed on both sides of the road.

It was a beautiful morning to be in the woods. About an inch of light snow had fallen since the last grooming, so it was a little slow going the first time around. Everything except the 7-8 trail was groomed. Still a lot of twigs sticking through, since the coverage is thin. The skiing is also bumpy because the snow just covers the ground. Grooming was excellent, and I was happy to make two full loops and enjoy the quiet. It is close to 13K if you ski the whole outer perimeter.

Generally good conditions nearer the trailhead where it was groomed. I stayed north of Pequaywan Lake Rd. Got a little thin and grassy around 12-11-5. Got a little rough 10-9 (outer loop). And 8-7 was so rough and ungroomed that I had to bushwhack back to the snowmobile road and take it back to 2 and the trailhead. Beautiful area, I look forward to coming back! BTW I skied the loops clockwise (making all left turns).
