Notes

Mcnaughton Lake Trail follows old logging roads around three lakes and has very few steep hills. It is very scenic and an excellent trail for a beginner. A five and a half mile loop is groomed for skating. There is a shelter with a fire ring on the trail.

All loops have been cut three times and tracked. The skater's loop was cut and groomed. The tracks are varying depths and there is scattered debris throughout all the loops. The base is very hard due to freezing rain over the weekend.

Joanie and I arrived mid-morning while Ranger Lynn was in the process of grooming. We enjoyed freshly set tracks on the classic loops and then skated a couple of loops around McNaughton Lake on more fresh corduroy. It was a great wrap-up to our 8-day ski visit to the area, before heading home to Madison. Much appreciation to Ranger Lynn for her very early morning grooming at Madeline and McNaughton the last 2 mornings (and especially knocking down those big drifts on the skating loop). It was nice meeting and visiting with her as well. Thanks to all of the grooming crew at the NHAL State Forest. Your care of these trails is outstanding!

I skied the green loop this morning. Simply beautiful. The classic tracks were well set, deep, and free of leaves. There had been some snowshoers, hikers, and dogs, but fortunately they did not disturb the tracks. Such a lovely spot. Perfect for beginners. Thank you!

I first skate skied the red loop. I go out and back and they a second time out and back to the trail hut. That adds up to 10 kilometers. There were about two inches of fresh snow on top of the skate deck but that just slowed things slightly. The skate deck was nice a level and glide was good. I finished up classic skiing the blue and yellow loops for another 17 - 18 kilometers. The classic track was firm, deep and speed was good. Overall conditions I would rate as very good.

All loops were cut and tracked. The skaters loop was cut and groomed. The couple inches of new snow helped to cover most debris, but some debris may still be on the trail in the thick conifers. Overall conditions are very good.
