Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I did classic this morning at Hyland. The tracks were in good condition with only a couple of short areas skied or driven over. The skate deck started out fairly good at 9:30 but by 11 am the skaters were complaining about the sugar on the hills; it looked like birkie wave 3 to me. They had a couple of huge snow piles they were starting to plow out so maybe if the weather holds they will have another loop ready soon.

The skate deck was incredibly fast and hard. Skaters were really moving. But there were no classic tracks set. Snow guns were blowing making more snow.

Nice short Star loop open so you get a bit of hill in. But the snow is soft! There were a handful of people looping around. Nice to get out without a long drive to the north.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
Got to Hyland around 11:30 am and was surprised that there were only a couple others skiing. Only the Star loop with the hill behind chutes and ladders is open, with a spur to the chalet and lessons area. Skate deck was that fun combination of icy fast but slightly soft with excellent grip. Some leaf debris on the hill in the NW corner. By the time I left around 1 pm about eight more had showed up, and 10-12 people were taking lessons.

I arrived at 8AM and was the only skier on the trail, which was also the case when I left at 9AM. That's really rare. Currently just the short loop by the chalet is open. In spite of last night's drizzle the course was very fast and good. I did a few face plants on the NW corner where the rain knocked ironwood leaves onto the course. Classic tracks are set.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
Skied the trail at around 11 AM and was the only skier there until just before I left. The loop that was open was .83 K in distance and includes the hill going up past the play area. There is a 200 meter spur that lead out from the chalet. The small practice area by the chalet was groomed. The snow today was actually pretty good considering the temperature was in the low 40's, perhaps due to no sun and few skiers.

They had snow guns going all through the Star loop. Hope for a few more cold nights. Fingers crossed we'll have some skiable snow in the south metro soon. Even looks like they were starting to make snow up the hill toward Frog town.

Snowmakers are on from the chalet down to Jan's Place and the Star Loop. Hopefully it will be open soon if they get enough made before the warm weather comes back!

Observation Scheduling
[ Trails: Closed, Bare ground ]
Snowmaking Update: Due to Hyland Lake's low water level (the main water source for nordic snowmaking), we will be using a different water source for snowmaking this year. We will be connecting to the Hyland Hills groundwater system and will start on the cross-country trails once the majority of Hyland Hills' snow has been made. Weather is the biggest factor right now with mild temps in the forecast. We will keep you posted on our timeline and progress.
