Night
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Classic tracks on man-made were icy but decent kick with skin skis. However, descents were pretty treacherous - I decided to cut my losses and did a pretty short ski. I changed to skate but by that time it was pretty crunchy so I only skied a short lap. I was a bit surprised at how packed the trail was - either they aren't grooming daily, or there are a heck of a lot more skiers during the day than at night, because the place was pretty empty.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Rock skis ]
Skied the Lake and Hills trail. Very very icy and packed ice. I skated thinking it would be better than the tracks but still pretty terrible in several places. Man made snow looked good and skied well. I wish I would've stayed on it.

Snow making loop was improved from Sunday, but still icy/hard and very fast. I was striding with skins and struggled to stay in the tracks on the uphills. Downhills were wicked fast. I took a peak at the natural trails but they looked like a soupy/icy mess.

Snowmaking loop: I guess not surprising but icy. Hard packed and fast. Slippery but not a total nightmare. Some areas with just a dusting of loose snow on top. Others areas not.

After seeing the natural snow trails that were groomed yesterday I don't think I'll be venturing out on them so I stuck to the man made loop this morning. The skate deck was about as perfect as could be with a great corduroy surface provided by the excellent groomers at hyland. Looking forward to a couple more weeks of skiing.

The blown snow trails are open. Skate deck was good - super fun. Switched to classic for a bit - tracks set and firm, but their bottoms were polished to a icy finish. Was skiing skins and could not get any kick on most climbs. Skate was the technique of choice today!

Skied the snowmaking loops - It's nice to have a place to ski given the weather. The snow is fast to icy. Deck is firm and completely flat with no corduroy and not much on top making it difficult to push off.

Some grippy areas but mostly ideal. Groomed tracks are in average or above average based on my dozen visits this year. Friendly crowds, beautiful snow on twigs, saw deer, and did 3 loops for 7.5 miles.

I skied the manmade loop at Hyland and I was quite impressed considering the warmer conditions recently. A small section was closed for a downed tree and I avoided the Big hill because another skier mentioned it was pretty treacherous going down and I didn't feel like going up anyway. But other than that it was pretty good. A little soft snow in a few places but faster than I expected.

I was prepared to leave before I even set my skis down, having read reports for other areas, but, wow! Hyland was great! The snow was impossibly loose (not an ice rink) despite the thaw so skating was awesome. Even going down big hills there was enough loose snow to prevent wild sideways skidding. Many kudos to the groomers! I stayed off the natural snow, it looked a bit scary. The entire 5k man-made is open.
