Trail Detail
Notes
With trails from beginners to expert and a very modern, heated trail center, Wild River State Park is one of the hidden gems for cross-country skiing in eastern Minnesota. The Aspen Knob loop is extremely challenging.Trail Reports

Really nice skiing at Wild River. I skied portions of the Mitigwaki Loop, the River Access Road, and the Walter F. Mondale River Trail south from the boat landing. Mostly the tracks were very good, with just a few places where the tracks were a little soft or slightly uneven. Absolutely beautiful winter woods. I saw about 10 swans close to shore south of the landing. Best skiing I've had this winter.

I skied mainly on the Mitigwaki Loop (bike trail side) and River Access Road which was a firm and fast ride downhill. Trails were a bit stiff with the temperature contrast from Thursday to Friday, despite being freshly groomed. Overall fair to good, with the best skiing on the bike trail portion. Despite having the full width of the road, someone walked right in the ski track and combed portion of the River Access Road, making a fast hill that much more challenging.

Skied Amador Prairie to Nevers Dam trail to Walter Mondale river trail to Amik's pond to Mitigwaki. Great conditions. Track was clean of debris. Little soft with temperature about 38. Had the trail to ourselves. Traveled about 4.6 miles. Best ski of the season. Not many people out.

This was a bit disappointing. Skied Deer Creek loop from the Visitors Center. Once you get down the big hill and turn south off the Amik's Pond trail, the ski trail was not groomed at all. Single track was set by previous skiers, but the deck wasn't exactly firm or level. Could have been much worse, though. No downed limbs from last week's storm, and zero bare spots to be found. I stopped at the park office on my way out and asked about a grooming schedule, was told they hope to have all trails set by the weekend.

Beautiful ski in the woods with the trees covered with snow and more snow falling. Tracks have not been set yet, but enough people have skied there to give you a good track to follow. Hopefully with more snow they can set the tracks.

Skier made tracks everywhere, mostly in decent conditions. I found lots of large branches down on the deer creek and pioneer trails. There are still some smaller ones too but manageable. I hope they can remove the large branches soon and the tracks can be set by next weekend. I also skied the Prairie loop to Trillium and back to the Old Logging Trail. The section by the cabins were walked all over but it's bad only for about a half a mile. Otherwise excellent coverage and nice deep base.
