Trails were in great shape for skating this morning. Classic looked to be mostly good but noticed that occasionally skiers moved onto skating deck where things got a little crusty.

Firsthand: Classic

I decided to classic ski Lake Elmo this afternoon. I skied Green to Browns Pond, to the Flats, back to Green, then Prairie to Savanna to finish. Tracks were in decent shape, but pretty icy around the Savanna loop. Groomer did a nice job with the skate deck, I did all my downhills on the skate deck and also used the skate deck when the tracks got too icy. We're still skiing in March, amazing!

Went out around 10:00 this morning. Trails hadn't been groomed when I started but were by the time I finished. Conditions were great for March. Things were a little sticky but there was no ice. Well worth it!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Trails were groomed and tracked. South facing hills and tops of hills are icy. Other areas are starting to get very thin. Grooming plans: Plans are to clean up the skate deck Saturday and possibly groom again on Sunday.

Secondhand
I just called the main office and was told it's been too warm to groom the trails, they haven't been groomed since Saturday. The groomer is hoping to groom tomorrow morning with the colder temperatures.

I was disappointed to find Lake Elmo was not groomed. I skated Hills, Browns Pond and Prairie? (Can't find a map with trail names anymore). It was all corned snow except in the warmest spots where it was water-saturated snow. The weight of the 1 to 2.5 inches of corn snow was a problem because it would stick to my ski's tips or shovels and stop the return or recovery of them at the end of a stride I went down once as a result. Skated more erect because of that in order to lift my skis further out of the snow. Got down all the downhills okay, The long descent from Prairie was actually pretty fast. It was around 38 degrees. I used FastWax Yellow LF buffed with fluoro paste.

Showed up at about 3:00 expecting to find nicely groomed trails but no grooming had been done. I got out there anyway since I made the trip and found very good coverage over what is mostly a deep base. March is winter and since we have great snow this year it's disappointing that there was no effort to keep this trailhead, one of the most prominent in the cities in good condition.

Observation Secondhand
Went to Lake Elmo at 9 am today. Trails were not groomed since the recent snow. The tracks skied into the ungroomed snow yesterday were now frozen. I had planned to skate there but did not attempt to. Park personnel said they were waiting to hear about any grooming plans.

The trails are not groomed after last night's snowfall. Classic skiers will get that great backcountry experience. For me skating was not worth it. The heavy snow made it hard to lift my tips out of the snow. I ended up turning around. I'd wait until they groom again. It's been an awesome year. So today was an anomaly.

I skied at 11 am, and the skate deck was firm but softening, with a couple minor ice patches. The conditions were better than Saturday for sure, with just enough edge set opportunity for speed and control. It appears they reset classic tracks overnight, and those conditions looked superb. Icy gliding, yes, but tracks were deep and consistent on almost all the trails. Very impressive grooming all over the area. And I was glad to see so many skiers out enjoying excellent conditions.
