Got out just before 10 am, and the deck was still fairly firm. The snow, though soft, felt more like natural snow that had warmed. Under the warm sun and with the air temp in the 40s, the loose snow became slushy at 10:53. There were some dirty patches as others have noted. But overall the course was still enjoyable. The slush made it a lot harder to ski, and the snow started getting very grabby on my coat of blue. Get out early if possible.

By 2 pm the morning corduroy was gone. Groomers have done a nice job with a solid flat skating deck. Where the "March" sun has done it's work it was rather icy requiring a less aggressive kick and more aggressive poling. Great to be out and enjoyed the longer 4.3 k groomed trail.

I am very grateful for the amazing conditions at Wirth, even while what little natural snow there is melts in the warm temps. The groomers are doing an awesome job at all hours of the day and night. I've been out each of the past three mornings, today starting a bit earlier at 5:00. Today was the roughest in terms of the shape of the tracks, but it's still awesome. I ski classical. On most of the course the tracks are firm and deep. There are several icy spots, especially on south facing slopes, where the tracks are very thin. On La Squadra uphill it looks like the tracks are leftover from yesterday so they are quite rough. A few places the tracks were just missing where you'd expect them (most notably lower stadium coming out of Green Meadow), but every groomer takes a different approach. The trail is just about exactly 4K.

Got out on the corduroy just before the absolutely stunning sunrise. There were a few spots of ice chunk snow and crusty ice, but overall it was pretty nice. The downhills weren't very carved up, it was mainly the uphills that get a lot of sun that were the problem. As the sun came out and the day warmed up more, the snow definitely got softer but was still firm enough. And the ice chucks softened so that was less of a problem. I was on an old coat of blue so the warmer snow did start putting on the brakes in spots. The trails were not as busy as I expected. It seemed like the early morning crowd thinned out around 9 when the later morning crowd came in, so there were always people out but it did not feel crowded. Overall, several very enjoyable hours. Thanks again groomers and snow-makers.

Got rolling late, skied around noon time. Sun was taking its toll on a couple of the SW facing slopes on Trail 18, but rest of the trail system was great. Really appreciated the extra Ks now added out across the golf course and field, makes it a lot more interesting and not as much climbing per lap. While I'd love to be skiing on natural snow (Maplelag, Gunflint, ABR...), feel very blessed to have this artificial snow within a short drive! And the new Trailhead building is icing on the cake.

Fantastic conditions continue at Wirth this early morning! Despite the temps above freezing, the trail was relatively fast and very firm this morning, and the sunrise over downtown made each lap even better. The 4K loop is holding out great, and there are fresh classic tracks throughout the course today, along with a solid skate deck. Great sunny day to get out and enjoy Wirth!

Excellent! Skiied all man-made and it was freshly groomed with good coverage and snowmaking to beat. Thanks groomers.

Grooming [ Trails Open: Most, ]

I groomed the snowmaking loop Friday night at Wirth. I finished the skate deck on the entire length of open trail (4.3.k). Unfortunately, as I was setting classic track, I had a mechanical issue with the groomer that will need to be resolved in the morning. Classic track is missing on the northern most section of trail from the climb up to Coaches Corner, along the backside, through La Squadron, back up to the Upper Stadium, and downhill to the maintenance shed. The rest of the trail has nice classic tracks. Sorry about this - skater's delight today! The trail is in excellent shape. Enjoy the sunshine!

Grooming Scheduling [ Trails Open: Most, ]

We pushed out and groomed the Green Meadow (first half of Twin Lake trail up to meadow and back via meadow cutoff trail) loop this evening and opened LaSquadra yesterday. We now have a total of about 4.3k open for classic and skate on the snowmaking loop. Just outside of the lower stadium we have created a round-a-bout to help manage skier traffic. The round-a-bout is to be skied in the clockwise direction. Our traffic directing signage will be up soon!
For a few days more, continue to access the trail via the steps behind the Trailhead. Next week we will be pushing out part of the lower stadium so that access to the trail system will be able to flow in and out of there. As temps cool again we will continue to make snow on the south half of the lower stadium, Twin Lake trail and the tubing and snowboarding hill.

With a new loop open on the Sledding Hill, the trail is exactly 3km according to my watch. It was a little chewed-up. Classic track looked solid except on the steepest parts of hills.
