Trail Reports

2014-2015 season
Reports 5 to 14 of 103    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Plenty of snow left but getting dirty.
I skied just before sunset. Most of the snowmaking course has excellent depth remaining. A few spots are quite dirty. Don't go through the lower stadium on your lap as the snow gets pretty filthy and slow behind the start line. The hairpin at the bottom of the tubing hill might need a reroute in a couple of days because of a section of tilled dirt. Otherwise, it's in good shape. You can put the kick wax in storage though. Klister, waxless, or skate from here on out. A week of decent skiing left I would guess, and then one more week after that for the diehards, masochists, and rock ski connoisseurs.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Manmade loop perfect for skating. Nice and smooth. They tracked the stadium otherwise one classic track through the rest. I ventured to the back 40 but quickly turned around after seeing a lot of very thin spots which will be exposed quickly.
When I finished at 10 AM it was warming up dramatically. Should be some great spring skiing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Skated the Bog, Butler, JD Gardens, Tornado Alley and the front nine. The Bog was outstanding (almost could have used good skis). Butler was decent except for the big south-facing downhill just before turning left across the swampy area. Take care because there is a 10 foot dirt gap on the hill and it's hard to stop in time. (I couldn't despite dragging my butt as an anchor). The rest of Butler was fine. JD Gardens and the front nine were ok with some very thin patches and Tornado Alley is full of rocks offering a nice coarse free stone grinding so your skis will be ready for the 50 degree days.
Thanks to the groomers for continuing to get out and pack the trails.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Surprisingly decent in Eloise Butler and Bog areas.
Classic skied this morning in south Wirth. Trail was groomed and mostly nice, but rather uneven and bumpy in places. No classic track set, but the snow was soft enough that it was fine without a track - and no matter: it was great just to get off of the snow-making loop, especially on such a beautiful day!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Very good on snowmaking loop.
Excellent would be evaluating too. I saw skate and classic skiers out today, and everyone looked like they're having a great time. I did the snowmaking loop twice and it was a bit sugary, but it wasn't fast to the point of being dangerous. Thought it was a very good day for skiing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Perfect classic tracks on Man made loop. Skate ski racers looked like they were having a good time.
Skied midday. Also tried the Judy loop a couple times but wouldn't recommend it. The groomed areas were a mix of ice and bare spots but there was some good snow on the borders.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed, good classic tracks.
Strided for the first time in a month. I was happy to find good classic tracks on almost the entirety of the snowmaking loop. Only the tougher hills had some icy chunks in the tracks. The skate deck was too hard or icy, even on my squirrely classic skis.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed, borderline icy on snowmaking loop. Fast, no, maybe not fast, but offering little resistance. Still excellent, as expected at Wirth.
Tonight's conditions seemed fast, but my lap time was down from normal, probably because I put the brakes on for most downhills. So the benefit of tonight's conditions was not in speed, but in being able to cover more distance with less effort. Exposed parts of the trail were scoured down to icy corduroy ridges, whereas protected parts maintained just enough loose snow to get an edge. It was a lesson in sedimentary geology, that will be erased with tomorrow's grooming. Warning: short spruce stems blown down on the trail along the long gradual uphill on the west side can result in a nose plant. If I had had a broom I could have swept them away. The pattern of where the trail was wind scoured down to.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
The 3.3K snowmaking loop is in pristine condition. Perfect corduroy, clean and deep classic tracks, no icy sections, perfect edging throughout. The Twin Lakes/Par 3 loop is still skate skiable (natural snow), similar to its condition on the Pre-Loppet... and it is really quite enjoyable, although "B" skis are advised. The Judy Loop is a bit more precarious and requires rock skis and a good sense of humor... probably best avoided until we get more snow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Twin Lakes is skate-skiable!
Skied Twin Lakes twice at 5:30 p.m. There are a few light patches but generally it was fabulous. It's great to be in the woods again!
