A nice set of trails with rolling hills. The first lighted trail system in the metro, it still attracts a lot of after-work skiers.

2022-2023 season

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Surprisingly good skiing with only a few icy areas and a few leaves and cones occasionally. Given the recent rain/snow/slush, this is great skiing. Used best skis with no regrets. Great job, groomers! All trails very skiable!

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skated all the loops. Most of the snow was soft and water-saturated but not yet sloppy slushy. There were some packed sections where the snow was just soft. I encountered several spots with bumps in the skate deck. Some tree debris here and there but all easily avoidable. Classic tracks looked in rough shape.

Skate skied at around 3:30 pm. Snow is getting icy and fast, still enjoyable but need a good grooming for better grip in some sections.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied freestyle all trails around 11:00 am. Grooming has clearly improved, trails are even, classic trails looked in good shape too. Snow was getting somewhat soft, although faster than yesterday a few icy patches including on the two descents of Skyline trail (some caution to control your skis).

Beautiful trails today. The trails were a little dirty or something in multiple spots but can't complain. Near-perfect warmer conditions, nice consistency and no rutting or unevenness or anything. Very nicely maintained trails.

Nice day at French. Nicely packed and very few ruts. Observed that the tracks looked very good. Looks like the report says they are grooming every day.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied all trails around 9:30 am. Good coverage, no debris, classic probably in fair shape only. Freestyle grooming good except for the grooming equipment tracks (see picture) and some unevenness from time to time. Snow getting faster with further compaction.

Went to French at 9 am hoping for a great classic ski on this cold day and was disappointed. The classic tracks were thin, washed out or non-existent, appearing to not have been reset since perhaps yesterday morning. I struggled around Lagoon, Lake, and Meadow, and after taking a look up Skyline, I gave up and went back to the car for skate skis. Some sections of the skate deck did show signs of having been groomed this morning but not the entire trail system. If I were to compare the Piston Bully groomed man-made loops to cycling on freshly paved perfect asphalt, I would compare the grooming I'm seeing on the natural snow trails this year to trying to ride that same road bike on a gravel road. It can be done but the battles over uneven surfaces, partial traction and bumps take some of the fun away. Still, any day that ends like this is still a good day.

Beautiful day at French with snow crystals on tree branches. The skate deck had been groomed early morning (I started at 9:00 am). There were a few wavelets on Lagoon but all very good and not fast yet.

Started out skiing classic on the Lagoon trail. The classic tracks were shallow and washed out in many places by the time I got out there at 7 pm. The skate deck looked more appealing so I switched to skate and did some laps on the lit trails. The skate deck had seen a lot of traffic, resulting in it having been packed down fairly well. It was still a bit soft, slow and somewhat uneven from all the traffic but soft and slow conditions are my happy place, allowing me to maintain control through the unevenness. After 13" of new snow in the area, I was actually quite surprised at how solid the skate deck was. Solid pole plants and no crashing through the skate deck; very skiable.
