24 Hours of Telemark Update

We are very sad to inform you that we will have to cancel the 2007 24 Hours of Telemark marathon event. Please be assured that we are as disappointed as everyone.

There has not been any snowfall since our last update and temperatures have been too warm for snow making. Conditions on the Telemark trail system are definitely too thin to hold our event considering that last year our skiers completed 2980 laps of the course over the 24 hours time span. Even shortening the event to 12, 6, or 3 hours would be more than the course could handle. We worked on the course as much as we could but with the above freezing daytime temperatures and lack of snow, our base is down to less than 1 inch. We feel this would not be safe conditions for all skiers and potentially damaging to your ski equipment.

There is a chance of snow forecasted for the weekend which could make the trails useable for the race, but this is not the year to place your bets on weather predictions.

Team Sports Events and Telemark Resort will host a party Saturday night at 8:00pm in the Parlor on the second floor (3rd level) of Telemark for all 24T registrants and volunteers. We'll have brew, music, light snacks, and do some schwagg drawings for some of the great products that have been donated by our generous sponsors. Please consider coming to join us for the party.

As we stated the other day, you can use Telemark Resort as a base to head out in search of skiable snow. The Birkie and North End trails are currently groomed and skiable. Telemark trails are closed, but can be skied with caution on rock skis. Absolutely the best conditions in the region are at ABR and Wolverine about 90 minutes away. Check for condition updates for the Birkie trail and other local trails.

Telemark Resort has been very accommodating by changing their room cancellation policy to 24 hour advance notice; thus the deadline to cancel your room is today (Thursday) for the weekend. They have also waived the two night minimum for the special event rate, so you may still book rooms for single or both nights at the special rate. Don't forget to bring your swimming suits to enjoy the sauna, whirlpool, and swimming pool if you stay at Telemark Resort!
Call Telemark Resort at: 877-798-4718 for information and reservations.

We know that the situation is a disappointment to all, but we have had a combination of the worst weather conditions this winter: rain, temperatures too high to make snow and very little natural snow. But there is still much to do here -- great skiing conditions in the Ironwood area, some local skiing, ice skating or nordic skating on the lakes, snowshoeing, and the warm hospitality of Telemark Resort and the northwoods residents.

Please come and make the best of the hand we've been dealt in this El Nino winter
