Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 22    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Monday, April 4, 2016
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Fantastic, packed powder on April 4!!
Woke up this morning to 5F degrees, and thought it would be good to check out the Pincushion Trails. We had gotten a few inches of snow over the weekend, and figured I would be breaking trail. Much to my delight the groomers were out! Skiing is especially good for skating, and there is also a pretty decent classic track in most places. With temperatures staying cool this week, and some new snow predicted, we will hopefully have skiing through this upcoming weekend.

Grooming
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: 90% of the trails are open. Our 20 inch base is holding up well. Skate lanes were thoroughly reconditioned last night. Classic tracks have been reset.
Very cold nights have ensured our base stays intact. Forecast temps at night for the next week should be well below freezing, so we're looking for some great spring skiing for the next week. We're going to stay on top of grooming as long as it stays cold. Great spring skiing.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good to very good spring like skiing conditions, skate or classic.
More than adequate snow cover on the Pincusion Trails. Averaging 8-16 inches. Pisten Bully groomed at the end of last week. Firm although soft surface towards the end of the day.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Perfection on North Advanced, Ole, Hilfiker, and Canyon Curves!
Pincushion was something else today! Sunny, 15 degrees, no wind, and very fast, exciting downhills. It doesn't get much better than this in the north country. Now back to the reality of our snow in the cities.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: 4" of new snow, freshly groomed on Lower Snowman, West Overlook, and the Pincushion Mt. loops--soft, but still in very good to excellent condition for classic.
We had a good ski this morning, with an added bonus of hiking off the trail to the top of Pincushion Mt. What a view! We did miss skiing the expert hills, but they hadn't been groomed yet.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Very good for classic and skate on the Snowman loops. The rest of the trails were being regroomed for races tomorrow.
It's always a good feeling to get back to Grand Marais, and all their great snow and ski trails! Pincushion has some of the best trails in the state!

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good for skating, classic tracks had some drifting snow and have lost definition in many places.
We skied the west overlook, both upper and lower snowman, and B&B loops. Cold, sunny and breezy.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good; Lots of snow, freshly groomed, soft.
Skated most of the trails Saturday. They were freshly groomed but quite soft making it slow going on the deck and also downhill in the tracks. The lighted trail (west overlook) was better packed. Still a beautiful day in woods, just had to work a little harder for our K's.

Saturday, January 30, 2016
Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Poor conditions. Trails not groomed and 5" of fresh, heavy, wet snow.
Do not recommend skiing today at this location. Warm weather and snow conditions caused the snow to clump to the bottom of the skis which made it very difficult to ski.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Not groomed, warm.
11am start. Not a good day to ski without glide wax. More advanced skiers seem to be doing OK. Needs to be groomed. Temps near 40.
