Notes

A great hilly trail system completely in the woods. Because of the woods, the trails hold their snow better than most.

2016-2017 season
Reports 1 to 9 of 9    Month: Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Very good coverage, freshly groomed. Very slow and soft. The trails look great but the snow was soft and unpredictable. Had to worry about face planting on the downhills. Walker and dog went for a stroll on the trail. I don't recommend skiing there until the temperature drops again.

Skied Terrace Oaks this weekend and the conditions were great at this woodsy, quiet park. We were there early Sunday afternoon - it was sunny and the temperature was around 32, but the snow was not melty. The tracks were in good shape overall, with some twigs and isolated bare spots.

Skied with headlamps the entire system with hill repeats. Exhilarating downhills. Great skiing with five student athletes!

Skied the big loop this afternoon. Trails were in remarkable shape with recent grooming. Skate deck and classic tracks both superb.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Trail has been rolled, but no classic track has been set. Only a few skiers had been out before me. Even without the track I found it easy to classic ski it. Hills are great.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skiing was poor-fair for classic, fair-good for skating. Conditions probably have deteriorated since warmup started. Temperatures were rising above freezing and I probably needed wax for warmer conditions. There were many spots where the ground was visible, mainly in the form of leaves popping up through the snow. It was hard to use the tracks - Not enough grip on the uphills, too fast on downhills.

Corduroy packing has been done. Lots of leaves and some dirt in places but it didn't slow me down too much. No classic tracks yet. Hopefully more snow coming!

Skated the 5+ km outer loop at 2 pm, noting the inch deep edge to edge "corduroy", that is, grooming that appeared as ski-width wide tracks about an inch apart, interrupted by intermittent tire tracks or ruts. Good coverage, some grass showing through on hills, little dirt. Just hard to skate on my first time out, or rather, hard to hold the same line with both skis while gliding. Still, I had pleasant 10F degree sunny weather, adequate CH4, and just a number of pleasant sections on this hilly loop.

New snow had coated the beautiful oak forest of Terrace Oaks on the glacial moraine of the south Minnesota River Valley. This nice rolling set of trails was not rolled yet so we were skiing in newly skier made classic tracks. I don't think we had an major scraps or scratches on our rock B-skis and the skiing was fun as we heard the call of owls many times. Great trail that flows really well with good run outs on down hills. A gem!
