Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Skated at 5 am with temp. of 22 fahr and 10 am with temp of 32F. Mixed base of crumbled ice intermixed with new snow. Very small "potholes" from grooming temp extremes (daytime melting, nighttime freezing). Overall rating of 6.9/10, with deductions for crumbled ice, micro potholes, and weather-related course degradation. Overall, however, the conditions were quite good.

I got out late morning and the snowmaking trails, and it was already getting pretty warm on the trails. Great grooming for both skate and classic. The classic tracks alternated with good snow, a little slush, and some ice. Fast in the shade and slow in the sun. I'm just happy we got some snow, and can have some nice spring skiing for a few days! Thanks to the groomers!

Fresh snow has brought so much beauty to Wirth! Skate deck is a little soft but getting better as groomers continue to make passes around the trail. Classic tracks looked well set with a few leaves.

Conditions perfect this morning. So much better than the last couple of days. Fast snow and not much ice. Get out before the warm-up! Some debris and leaves but snow cleaner than it was earlier this week.

I waited until late in the day to ski, hoping to avoid icy conditions, but I should have waited until tomorrow. Or maybe it was because conditions had already started to cool by my 4 p.m. start, solidifying ridges in the sugar on some of the uphills and the troughs on the downhills. At any rate, conditions were too dicey for my comfort level. I did find a few stretches on the Green Meadow loop where I could ski with confidence, so I mostly did loops there. Climbing LaSquandra and the North Finger were great. I would have been happy with a cardio workout composed up just of climbing up, but you can't keep going up without going down too, which was too scary. If I return tomorrow it won't be until temperatures are above freezing. B skis because of debris in the trail, but it really wasn't that bad.

Delightfully surprised by the fast fun conditions this morning. Some sticks make me mark B skis, but honestly, the sticks are avoidable. I had a super good time, and I got to see some of the snowboarding action and the junior loppet skiers during their race. It's a great day to get out and ski!

Night
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Skiing well after sunset, I couldn't see the trail conditions very well, maybe that was good. Lots of leaves in the classic tracks, and lots of "color" in the snow. The tracks were decently deep and the downhills were in better shape than I expected, not too rutted or ice-packed. Get out there but not with your best equipment.

The base is still there but the conditions are what you'd expect for the weather. Lots of leaves and twigs slow things down, and quite soft all the way around. Trail is about 50-60% brown with dirt. Only a couple spots where the bare ground could be seen. Unlikely to damage your skis, but guaranteed to get a thin layer of dirt to coat your skis and boots once all the water evaporates after your workout.

The conditions were still pretty good despite the warm-up. Skate deck was looking pretty beat up but skate skiers were still looking fairly fast despite slush. The classic tracks were much better than I thought they would be - still pretty deep in many places. Snow is getting dirtier with more debris. Green Meadow through Twin Lake were much better in terms of trail holding up compared to upper trails and bigger hills. Snow all over varied in slushiness but Red Silver V60 kick wax had great kick nonetheless. It was much better skiing than I expected to find on a beautiful sunny warm day!

Conditions today on snowmaking trails were outstanding. The classic tracks were deep (though I wish they ran longer thru corners). Good crowd enjoying great snow today. Thanks crew.
