Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 5 to 14 of 22    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Tuesday, December 29, 2015
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: The trails were tracked and in good generally good condition.
For anybody who has not skied Telemark in a while, it is a confusing and frustrating experience. The marking is poor both in terms of where the office/fee area is and on the trails. There is no defined area to start and the trail map we were given appeared to be a Google Earth photo with 2 trails marked. The problem is that we never knew where we were on the trails because the only markings we saw were hand drawn arrows and a couple of "do not enter" signs. The bones of a once great trail system are still there but maps and signage would be appreciated, especially when you are paying to ski the trails.

Observation
Cable area received 5 - 6 inches of new snow Friday night. Stopped in to check out the conditions at Telemark as we purchased annual passes to ski on the man-made snow. Nothing has been touched. The 5 inches of snow received earlier in the week had not been rolled so there is close to a foot of powder on the trails. I hope they can get out to groom before the New Year's holiday.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Pretty good, about four inches of natural snow mixed in with some artificial snow to give it a great base. A couple of kilometers were groomed for skating and there was a shallow classic track set.
Skated Telemark this morning, the snow machine was running the entire time and temps were around five above. The snow was a bit slow at times but felt good to be out. Also, skiers can venture off the artificial loop and if you are careful, you can ski in about four inches of rolled trails around Telemark. The groomer was out doing the manmade loop when we were leaving...enjoy!

About 9/10 of a km loop with a few hills, 4 to 10" deep, edge able and smooth skating, some remnant classic trails.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Man made snow loop, great skiing on a short loop.
Hard but edge-able. Fast and fun. Plenty depth and some nice hills. This should hold thru the warm weather ahead. Classic tracks perfect.

Conditions: Very impressed - fast and a big hill.
Woohoo! First trail report of the spring ...... Winter. I decided to check out the Telemark trail that CXC made and I was very impressed. It was groomed and with the cool night, very fast and hard packed. I was out there around noon when it was in the low 49s and the trail wasn't soft by any means. There is a heck of a hill on the back side so it was very painful to get up that thing! All in all, it is around a 1.5ish km trail. No rock skis needed, there were just a few brown spots but they weren't on the trail. Just a note of caution: there isn't really a natural flow of the trail so it intersects on its self 2x. The main one is on a big downhill and a flat part. Just look before crossing the path. I was there with 3 other people out there and they all seemed to be doing their own thing so it made it tricky on the downhill part.

Trail is groomed on the man made .9 K loop for both classic and skate. Universal red klister with VR 50 over the top worked well for classic.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Very skiable for classic but no grooming.
The best skiing was actually off the manmade snow loop, and out on the trails. Early morning with colder temps skate ski was nice gliding over well mowed areas, avoiding old tracks and trail, just making my own. But some icy treacherous downhills. What was BEST was classic later, out on the telemark trails, especially the John Bauer trail, as recommended by 2 other skiers. Thanks guys for breaking trail, I added a few K more.
