Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 11 to 20 of 55    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, February 18, 2017
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
The ice has softened so that shouldn't be a problem given the current forecast. Lots of standing water and Lake Andresen is forming at the main intersection next to the parking area. There is a very hard base that provides good skiing through much of the trail system. Bare ground is starting to poke through and I would treat any hill where you can't see the bottom from the top with caution.

The trail is either very hard packed or solid ice. I stayed away from the steeper hills because they are very icy and dangerous. I was able to get a good work out and probably my last time out before the Birkie. Let's hope we get some snow!

Ice skating on most corners, and technique mattered everywhere else. Classic tracks for double poling only. The only game in town!

Very hard and glazed skating surface that softened only a little by noon. Classic tracks are absolute luge tracks and very fast--especially downwind--but no control.

Very good skating overall, though some sections are rather hard, but softened as the temp increased. Classic tracks are still fun and only an occasional "Oak Leaf Hopscotch" is required.

Trail is in good shape. It was recently groomed and has a good solid base. There are a few spots that are starting to get icy.

Groomed today. Skating is OK again. Hopefully they'll groom again Thursday to further soften the skate deck.

As of 1:00 this afternoon no new grooming had been done. Almost like Spring skiing. The center of skating deck is hard-packed snow throughout the trail system, but along the edge of the deck there is some lightly traveled corduroy left. A couple of thinnish spots on the steeper downhills. The snow pack was just starting to soften up a bit, but still very fast. Classic tracks are hard and fast and mostly free of debris.

Skating deck is firm and good corduroy throughout the trails, except near the chalet and on the lighted loops, where the snow is hard-packed. Classic tracks are deep and firm with just a hint of glare on the bottom, making them very fast, but it is the Month of Falling Oak Leaves and now certain troublesome areas have leaves in the tracks.

Skied 20K Thursday night, great grooming everywhere, the trails were perfect but could use the overnight to set up more but the track was like a rocket. Should really be set up for firmly by Friday.
