Groomed today. Skating is OK again. Hopefully they'll groom again Thursday to further soften the skate deck.

As of 1:00 this afternoon no new grooming had been done. Almost like Spring skiing. The center of skating deck is hard-packed snow throughout the trail system, but along the edge of the deck there is some lightly traveled corduroy left. A couple of thinnish spots on the steeper downhills. The snow pack was just starting to soften up a bit, but still very fast. Classic tracks are hard and fast and mostly free of debris.

Skating deck is firm and good corduroy throughout the trails, except near the chalet and on the lighted loops, where the snow is hard-packed. Classic tracks are deep and firm with just a hint of glare on the bottom, making them very fast, but it is the Month of Falling Oak Leaves and now certain troublesome areas have leaves in the tracks.

Skied 20K Thursday night, great grooming everywhere, the trails were perfect but could use the overnight to set up more but the track was like a rocket. Should really be set up for firmly by Friday.

The groomer had made 2 passes over the 2 inches of new snow. No track was set yet. Today's wet snow was so sticky I accumulated 2 inch platforms in my kick pocket when climbing hills. The conditions could be wonderful when the temperatures go down.

The center of the skating deck on all the trails is very hard and icy with just a a thin bit of snow over the underlying ice, but often the edges of the deck have a bit of corduroy and decent edging. The first K or so of trails leading away from the chalet are especially hard and icy. It gets better farther out. The classic tracks are hard and mostly good for double poling, though waxless skis might work on some stretches.

All trails have been groomed as of this afternoon. There is a light corduroy throughout the system and the conditions vary from barely covered icy patches wherever the trail takes a dip to stretches of good -- and nimble -- skating. A dusting a power over ice slightly groomed in makes for fast conditions. Good skis might get scratched. No new tracks have been set and there isn't enough snow anymore to set any. However, the old tracks are mostly intact and have a very thin layer of packed powder on top of ice.

Obviously the snow has soaked up a fair amount of water, but the trail today was skiable. Because the snow is soft right now without temps dipping below freezing, ruts aren't really to much to worry about. There are several spots where it is icy, but there are some spots where the snow is white, particularly farther away from the parking lot in areas like near the gun range. A lot of skiers out there today. While not ideal and a bit slow, still OK to get out there.

Trails are very icy with some standing water. They are skiable, but certainly not ideal. There are some ruts and leaves are starting to show through. We could really use some snow.

Icy and rutted, needs grooming. Obviously with warm temps yesterday and today skiers were on it when it was soft. By 5 pm when I skied it had frozen over. There is enough snow to be edgeable for skating, but the ruts tended to grab my skis. Plenty of base so one hopes grooming will happen to make it pleasant again. Overall, I am happy to have some snow as Madison is a desert.
