Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

Grooming Scheduling
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Wet, soft....but 7-8" of new snow!
As of 10 pm, grooming crew has had to pull off the trail. The snow is too warm and wet and is just clumping and getting pulled off trail! They will resume rolling at 4am in hopes the snow has dried out. We will roll north of OO to Powerlines first in the morning, then hopefully south to Hatchery Thursday night. If all goes well, we will be able to comb down trail Friday. We will have great skiing as soon as the snow cooperates! Thanks for being patient. check back often for updates.

Grooming Scheduling
Conditions: Snow falling, 4" so far over already established base.
Snowing all day - so far approx 4" of heavy wet snow has fallen. Grooming crew will be out tonight rolling and assessing. Merry Christmas all!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Thin, twigs and shoots sticking up.
It was not smooth so the skiing tested your balance and your knees quite a bit. Full coverage with only one rock showing that I saw. We just skied the lighted loop south of Double O. So I can't say how it was up to Boedecker
It was about a 5 out of 10 ski and totally worth it.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Skied from OO to Seeley Fire Tower warming building. Pleasantly surprised at the beautiful conditions! Groomers worked their magic, setting corduroy on both the skate and classic trail. A few sticks from the windy blowdown earlier this week, but they also removed all the large debris. No classic tracks. Can use good skis with caution (we did not encounter any rocks). Get your snow-starved soul out the door and enjoy!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ B skis ]
Conditions: 2 inches of firm frozen base with 2" of fresh soft snow on top.
Terrific skating conditions mid-day today on the Boedecker loop, including all downhills. Safely used B skis. Secondhand: Grooming plans on the Birkie website call for possible rolling of trail from OO north to Fire Tower.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Ultra power crushed base, 2" at least.
No classic tracks yet. But great skating if you want to get off the hamster tracks. Skied from OO to the brook and skied on b+ skis.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Observation
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Fair to good for early season skating.
2-3 inch crusty base from frozen wet snow yesterday, with an inch of new snow overnight made for decent skating on classic trail between OO and Boedecker. Picked up lots of branches (and 2 trees are down) but it was a treat to be gliding on snow! Someone strided on Birkie side. Loops at OO should be fine, too. Snowflakes still drifting down.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: 3" of "ice pellet" base with an inch or so of fresh snow on the top.
Went from green grass to the best "early season" skate/classic skiing of the season in one day without grooming. Pretty amazing. Still rock skis and lots of twigs, but nice to be back on the open trail.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Poor but skiable.
Skied the loop from OO trailhead to Boedecker and back this morning. It was thin, rough, and icy, but skiable. The downhill at the 22k mark was terrifying...I wouldn't recommend it. Skiing south from Boedecker on the classic trail was better. Thanks to the groomers for rolling the trail. It was a good idea, but the weather just didn't cooperate. Still, it's always great to be able to ski the Birkie trail, even if conditions aren't the best.

Grooming
[ Bare ground ]
Last last night after the temps dropped below freezing we rolled the loops at "OO" and then north to Boedecker trailhead on both the skate and classic trails. Very thin with debris sticking up - but you cans ski! We will update here was soon as there is more to tell! Get out and enjoy! Reminder: Get your Birkie trail pass.
