New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

2015-2016 season

Observation
Ice, ice, baby! Skiing not advised when trails are frozen. Hoping for snow! Stay tuned.

Thursday, January 28, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Icy in many places, approaching boilerplate when temps are below freezing. Adequate coverage, some sticks and leaves on trail.
Conditions are what could be expected after thaw Wednesday. As it is refrozen many of the downhills (Terminal Moraine and Scouring Rush Run) are approaching extreme skiing skill level. Hard to keep skis under your feet. Best to wait until temps warm just above freezing or we get more snow before venturing out.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: My late Tuesday afternoon skate of the outer loop was on a lightly used half inch coating of new snow on top of a thin, firm, but not icy base. It made for a very pleasurable ride. It has been several years since we got excited about fractions of an inch of snow, but this year each little bit helps.
Like the last super El Nino, we are in serious snow conservation mode, which means grooming very lightly and only when absolutely necessary. Skiing has been quite good considering. The looming warm up is concerning. Stay tuned. Enjoy!

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Excellent....total coverage. Thin, but covered.
The coverage is stunning when you realize how little snow we have gotten. Thanks Dave Anderson and crew. Unreal job! I skied after work and used a headlamp. Really had a great time.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
The crew at Woodland Trails has once again done a superb job of grooming without much snow to work with. These very well designed hilly trails were great fun today! Fast, but not icy and only a couple dirt spots that were easily avoidable. No classic track due to not enough snow, but it was not a problem for the classic skiers in my group.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle

Conditions: Very nice skating, still no track setting for classic.
What was once good is now better! Late evening ski outing with Sue, found nice corduroy, a few deer, and nice temps.

Grooming
[ B skis ]
One new inch, rolled this morning. Tuesday evening Eagle 17 and Theodore ran the light screens on the edges of the outer loop to level the trail in advance of the new snow. Chainsaw and Dispatch ran the rollers on all trails this morning. Ancient One is predicting good skate conditions for the first time this winter season. Enjoy!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Great coverage, finally settling to get a bit faster for skating. No classic tracks yet.
Nice afternoon ski around outer loop to Top of the World as sun came out. Better day than last few as warmer temps have improved glide. Still good coverage on outer loop.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Rolled, soft and slow in cold mid-day outing.
Very nice coverage snow on outer loop. Still some potential to scrap the asphalt but if one rides a flat ski there is no problems.

Grooming
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Grooming report. 3 inches med heavy snow rolled Friday evening. No tracks set.
The engineers rolled the system after temps had dropped sufficiently. Snow was welcome as woodlands has been very sparse this year. Overnight temps will help set things up. Looks like midwinter but snow is still thin and not bonded to paved trails. A hard push could damage a ski edge so recommend B skis.
