New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

Ski trails getting back to the icy base and are now closed! Woodlands hosted a High School ski race yesterday that filled the trails and the parking lot with happy skiers and their families. Not wishing to waste any of what has become a rare commodity in recent years, we squeezed in two team practices before closing today. We again hope this is a temporary closure. Stay tuned.

Skate and classical trail surfaces were holding up real well considering the weather. Was firm at 10:30 a.m. and getting pretty "packy" by noon. Good coverage with only a few areas of asphalt showing through (easy to avoid).

No better place to see the sunrise than Top of the World. Woodland was fully covered and fast; there are even tracks on the inner trails.

Mr. Getting-More-Reliable as the season progresses just reported in that he and our third rookie groomer of the weekend, The Lineman, just finished their grooming run with the medium screens for our MLK Day skiing pleasure. It was another great day at Woodlands; walkers were enjoying the groomed winter walking trail and skiers young and old were doing their thing. It is days like these that make the year-long volunteer effort of the Trail Crew all worthwhile. Surf will be up at Woodlands again tomorrow. Enjoy!

All trails in great shape, classic or freestyle. Just a fine day to be XC skiing or even hiking on the groomed trails. Come and get it while you can.

Skied mid to late afternoon. Fantastic conditions for skating! Skied nearly all the trails, found the grooming to be perfect. Nice smooth deck, firm but not hard packed, easy to get an edge but not too soft or sugar. With temps in the mid 20s, it was as good as it gets for Nordic skiing! Classic tracks only on the flatter trails (as usual). Great day!

Refuge Guy and Rookie MS just finished pulling the medium screens around the trails to spiff them up for our Sunday ski. Conditions should be about as good as it gets for skate along with classic tracks set on the flatter trails. The trail crew will be out tomorrow morning cutting dead trees along the trails, but will confine most of their work to the winter walking trails. Enjoy!

Warning about juvenile gang disrupting trails even while grooming and skiing. Four members wearing similar tan colors were walking on trails while grooming. My wife almost had a collision with one member while skiing the gravity box hill. The members have no regard for tracks or skiers so beware of the white tail gang at Woodlands. Conditions are super for both skate and classic however watch for the gang members.

Soft, new snow on a recently rolled base. Fresh classic tracks set this afternoon. Great to be out here again, this is going to be fun this weekend as it sets up!
