Tuesday, January 12, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good to excellent.
The snow last night helped greatly; no ice and complete coverage today. Big snow piles on about half of the man-made loop.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair to good, B skis recommended.
The snow survived the rain very well on most of the lighted loop. There were a couple of icy areas in the prairie/on magic carpet and areas of thin coverage at the Evergreen trailhead (rocks). All other areas in good condition. About five snow machines were running tonight.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good to Very good.
They are making snow on the man made loop by Evergreen and the lower trails have icy areas so better to park at Homestead Hollow and ski the upper trails which are in very good condition. Thank you LP groomers!

Grooming Scheduling
Conditions: Lapham Peak received about 2" of snow Saturday evening. All trails were groomed again Sunday night. Skate and classic conditions will vary from good to great. There are some icy spots most notably in the South Field area and the one at the top of Magic Carpet Ride, all can be skied around. A track was set on the entire system Saturday with some sections (man-made and purple prairie loop) drifted in from blowing snow and worn from use. More snow is needed before a new track can be set.
Snowmaking has begun with great success and should last through the entire week. There are a few piles from the Evergreen trailhead up to SummerStage that can be skied around but not very easily. These piles must sit for a few days so any extra water may drain out and the piles can "cure" therefore your patience and understanding is appreciated until they can be spread. At this time things look promising for a full race course during the annual Lapham Loppet on Saturday, January 16th starting around 10am. Please consider signing up for this fundraising event put on by the Friends of Lapham Peak. It looks like winter has finally arrived, let's hope it sticks around.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good considering the crazy weather of the past few days. Classic tracks throughout, though blown over in the open areas. A few frozen patches in skate lane and classic but no probably skiing around.
Many thanks to the grooming crew at Lapham who not only did a lot with what they had available after the rain and warm temps, but groomed and posted a trail report before 1 a.m. on Sunday. It was nice to know what to expect before driving to Lapham. Conditions were exactly as described -- fairly good throughout, though there were some ice patches in a few spots, especially on the way down the last hill. I just pretended that I was skiing the frozen river basin at Noque. I skied classic, and while the tracks were blown in the open areas, it was all skiable. Again, thanks groomers!

Grooming Scheduling
Conditions: Very poor conditions for both classic and skate. Standing water from warm temps and rain. Bare spots beginning to show.
Lapham Peak received a fair amount of rain and warm temperatures that left ski trails in very poor condition. There are many areas of standing water and some spots that are nearly down to grass/dirt. With temperatures staying right around freezing, skiing is not recommended until the grooming report is updated due to many likely areas of ice. It appears that may not happen until late Saturday night or early Sunday morning after the rain water is allowed to drain. Snowmaking will start up again on Sunday night with the hopes of having a loop done by next weekend. Please check regularly for updates before coming out to ski.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Considering minimum snowfall, good!
Fair amount of fellow skiers. Everybody very friendly!
Some areas of heavy traffic are slippery (hard to get a bite) but hills provide a nice climb for skaters. Note: no garbage cans, bring your own container for trash.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Excellent for skate.
Coverage is almost 100% with only a couple erosion boards and sticks visible. Skate deck is firm, generally smooth, and fast. There is an ice patch on magic carpet, but it has gotten better as grooming has continued. The classic tracks I tried on the downhills were not straight, and overall the tracks did not appear to be very good due to thin snow. Snow was being made around the base loop today!

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ B skis ]
Skated the lighted loop. Good coverage with a small ice section on "magic carpet" with is easy to go around. Hardpacked but not icy and able to get some edging.
Their report says they will groom Thurs night for the holidays which should provide even better skating. They had the snowmaking on this afternoon and starting Wed night making snow with the forecast for temp in the teens.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good for skate, 100% coverage.
Skate lane was very firm, though a bit uneven. All sticks, rocks and roots were covered; only one erosion board on Two-Tier was visible. There is an ice patch on the way down Magic Carpet, but otherwise everything is snow. Great to be skiing the trails!
