Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 11 to 20 of 39    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
Skied the man-made loops after they were re-groomed late this morning. Good conditions on the skating lane with enough loose snow to get good edging. Several icy spots that aren't too bad to ski over. Stay to the left coming down Magic Carpet Ride until you pass the large icy patch on the right. Tracks were not re-groomed, but they look pretty good although they are icy.

Loop was groomed while I skated. Hard and fast before the grooming, good to excellent after grooming. Some icy spots but none too long to affect control. Full coverage no debris.

Office reported grooming this morning. Arrived at 11am with temperature of 37 degrees. Skating was very good and fun. Hard packed and fast with good edging. Did 20 laps of man-made loop but when temperature warmed up to 44 degrees it was slower but still OK. The sun area of the magic carpet would suddenly slow you when you skied into it. Man-made snow was clean, not dirty as before.

Just skied the man made loop, conditions are as good as can be, pretty fast on the skate deck, not too glazed, good purchase, classic tracks are worn but skiable, the back of the lighted loop was not lit tonight, and the base is really too thin to ski on, so only the man-made loop. Attempted the back loop but turned back due to very thin base and way too much debris poking through including sticks, grass and rocks.

I skate skied all the trail except squiggly and the wall. Many rocks in usual areas but still skiable. Groomer kicked up many rocks in a few areas on second half of green loop. Loops at Homestead on top were in better shape.

Conditions on the manmade snow loops remain excellent, with a mix of natural and manmade snow on a firm base. Skate lanes and classic tracks are in good condition. This report does not address trail conditions off the manmade snow loops.

Had a lovely ski Tuesday night on the man-made loop. The new snow of about 1" covered the icy base and made for some good skating. I didn't try the classic track but there were quite a few people doing classic. The track looked pretty decent.

The manmade snow loops are in their best condition of the season, with a deep, rock-hard base covered with a loose mix of new and manmade snow. Trails have been smoothed and leveled since last weeks warm weather (except for the "dip' near the timing hut), and provide great conditions for skating. There is also a classic track, but it looks like it could use some work.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Lapham Peak received about an inch of new snow Wednesday night. Not enough to make the regular trails skiable, but enough to freshen up the 1.5 K man-made loop. Skate lanes were groomed early this morning and a new track was set. Conditions are good for both with a hard/icy base. Lights will be on the man-made until 9pm Monday through Saturday, no trail lights Sunday evenings. Saturday, January 28th the Friends of Lapham Peak will be hosting the annual Candlelight "Hike" from 6pm until 8:45pm. There may be heavy vehicle traffic at the entrance tomorrow evening just so you are aware ahead of time, the man-made loop will be open and available to anyone who wishes to ski, just be mindful of the event.

Skating very difficult. Could not get edging on the icy hard surface. Groomed could only make marks as there was no loose snow. The 1" fresh snow was not enough after the rain yesterday that made the surface hard. Not enjoyable.
