Reports 166 to 169 of 169    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
The Field Loop is more skied-in and firmer, but also a bit bumpy in places, especially the South leg - which also has the most snow. North leg skied the best, while the west leg has some icy spots and tree debris.

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
Snow squalls throughout the day keep adding a little more cover to the rolled surface on the Field Loop. Conditions are still marginal, but better than yesterday. Areas in the woods or with a rocky surface are still troublesome and to be avoided.

Early season conditions at Lapham Peak -- but -- that's how every season starts. Park staff rolled the lighted loops this morning, compressing the 5 inches of wet snow the park received earlier this week. Conditions on the Field Loop, which is in the open and has a mowed grass surface, were poor but very skiable. I didn't hit any rocks or dirt during my 12 times around the loop. I would suggest that trail segments in the woods, where this is less/no snow, or with a rocky surface should be avoided.

Skated the smallest man-made loop, including the tail end hill climb (too thin to ski at all) up to Moraine Ridge Trail. Lots of thin areas with exposed debris, which christened my rock skis a bit further. I saw only one other set of skate tracks before mine. I think it's best to just wait for better coverage.
