2016-2017 season

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Good coverage with a few icy sections. Groomed hardpack corduroy skate deck and firm tracks. Pleasantly surprised at the good conditions considering the previous rain, ice, wet snow. Madnorski groomers did a stellar job! Very enjoyable skiing on both east and west trails.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
New wet snow has been groomed and tracked. The track is bad at the parking lot but improves rapidly as you climb any of the hills. Just beware of occasional dirt or debis and look for thin or wet spots on downhills. With a little care it was great to be skiing locally.

All Segments were open and it was not bad, actually pretty good especially in the non-lighted areas. Most was well groomed and skate deck was good. Some Icy spots but much better skiing then we have had....which is none!

About the same as yesterday. Some icy spots, especially by the south end of the hockey rink and by the start, at the warming building. Much better for skating than traditional.

Much better than yesterday. The full loop has not been set, a little shorter with it going below the sledding hill. You can still get to that loop but it's not groomed and has not been filled in with snow. A little crusty around the shelter but along the ice rinks and below the sledding hill is quite good. Still making snow so it's only going to get better.

The rain did a number on the trails. Snowmaking is occurring today, right in the middle of the 1 KM man-made loop. This effectively splits the course in two. East half: from warming shelter around the skating rink to the picnic gazebo where snow is being made is nearly unskiable for skating and the classic tracks are mostly gone. It's not only icy, but it froze after people skied while it was wet/sloppy and all the old skating tracks froze in place. Ski at your own risk. West part: past the snowmaking equipment is about a.25 mile remnant of the 1KM man-made loop. It has benefitted from the snowmaking and the hill isn't bad either. You can basically just do hill repeats over there. As mentioned, snow is actively being made. Conditions may improve as early as the 13th.

11 trips around the man-made loop thoroughly tested my belief that it's better to ski than not ski. Very hard track, nearly impossible to get an edge. Much more skating than skiing. Any loose snow the groomer brought up had been blown away. Once the sun gets behind the East hill it's a very cold place to ski. A set of deep and very firm classical tracks were set and I'll try those next time.

Man-made loop (1k) was excellent. Trails in the open areas are skiable with icy and bare spots. West trails in the woods were good but with a fair amount of leaves, dirt, sticks, etc., But there's good coverage and enough loose snow for good control. Trails on the east ridge are not groomed, rutted, icy; so no go. Let's hope the warm wet air and drizzle doesn't erode the thin base. Don't go until it cools down again.

The approach on the West looks awful, icy, bare and rutted but once around the first turn there was surprisingly good skating on the West. The groomer was out and made multiple passes while I was skiing. To be sure there are patches of ice, bare ground and lots of litter on some parts of the lower loop, nothing that can't be avoided. The big hill was in great shape, the second less so but still skiable. I didn't try the hill at the end since it looked very thin and littered, didn't look like anyone else tried it either. The East appears to be groomed as well and I plan to try that later. A very pleasant surprise.

Excellent skating and very good classical on both hills, full cover and freshly groomed. Classical would have been excellent were it not for quite a bit of leaves in many sections of the west. I needed to step out of the tracks for stretches. It would have been worse if I'd been using a softer wax.
