Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

2016-2017 season

Afternoon
Firsthand: Both
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skiing at Lester is excellent and freshly groomed. I went expecting rock hard and ice but I found a great skate deck and perfect tracks. This is some of the nicest skiing of the season and there is still lots of snow. The Lester Chalet is now open Monday-Friday 5-8, Sat and Sun 11-4. Lights are on every night.

Remarkably great! The track is in very good condition, even powdery in some places and fast. Classic track is deep, solid and fast. I thought it would have been icy from the warm up and then freeze but it is not. It should be very good again today.

Skied the lit loop at Lester Wednesday night after dark with good skis. Icy, but not scary icy. Surprisingly fun. Pretty decent coverage, let's hope the weather predictions are wrong. Minus a kid to put to bed and a report of a dog throwing up in the living room we would have stayed to ski longer.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Temps for today were warmer than forecasted. Groomers had to come off earlier than anticipated. We didn't get to all the trails we wanted to today. Lester was groomed today. Trail is holding together fairly well at this point. There is one wet area on the D Loop.

Night
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied around 8:00 pm. Tracks were very fast. A skater we ran into reported excellent conditions. Might be a different story during the day before the sun sets.

A bit of debris in the tracks from all the wind. But, tracks were in great shape. Debris was worst on the playground loop, but nothing to be afraid of.

Classic trails were great! Some debris. Conditions this morning were ideal and looked great for skating as well. Thanks City of Duluth groomers.

About 20 F, overcast and a few misty drops of rain when I started at Lester this morning. Beautiful sunshine and just below freezing when I quit around noon. I think Lester was re-groomed with the Poster Bully early this morning or last evening. Hard to imagine better conditions, or a prettier trail through the woods. Several unfamiliar bird calls, and a loud Pileated Woodpecker.

Lester never fails to disappoint. Perfect set tracks on all trails. There are two spots were the tracks have minimal brown ice on them, but otherwise, perfect conditions. I did not ski the playground loop, but everything on top was solid. Enjoy!
