Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

How much better could the trails at Lester have been this morning for both skate and classic? None. None more better! A perfect sunny day in the north woods, with perfect conditions.

Gorgeous tracks, firm skate lane. 30F. Loads of skiers. Even the steep hill into and out of the Lester Amity Chalet was beautiful and easy to ski up and down.

Excellent ski late morning to early afternoon. Earlier in the day the skating might have been a bit squirrely, but I hit it right in the Goldilocks zone as the temperature hit 20F. Well used mostly flat and firm skate lane, beautiful appearing classic track with rare washouts. Very little duff and the very rare patch of dirty snow. A touch up would be nice but I really had a great ski of the entire system that reminded me why I love this trail.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
I classic skied most of the trails that are lighted (at night) during the early afternoon. Temperature was about 1 to 5 degrees. Tracks were in perfect condition and as expected a bit slow....but had a very enjoyable ski session. And once again with the perfect tracks, it made me feel like I really know how to ski.

Skied in perfectly set classic tracks just a few hours after the groomer got done. Thanks go to the City of Duluth grooming crew! They were able to use the Pisten Bully and it really turned out great. Skating deck looked perfect, but was a little soft due to not having enough time to set up yet.

Beautiful day for a ski! The trails are in the best shape of the season with deep classic tracks and the skate deck is improving with each snowfall. There were a few spots where the right classic track drops down a few inches suddenly in downhills. Some soft spots on the black loops and on some right hand pole plants. Also be aware of some of the shrubs/trees near the classic track. I had to duck several times to avoid being whacked in the face. But other than that, tracks were in good shape. I didn't see any rocks but my poles might have found some judging by the sound they made. Could have been ice chunks too. I'm happy to see these trails finally starting to look better!!

Lester is really starting to look great. Still a little wavey, but great coverage and fun skiing. A solid 3" last 5 and more falling tonight. I like it!

Lester was groomed Monday morning! Thanks, groomers, and city. Beth and I had a great classic ski. The skate lane was also groomed, fresh cord. The new 3 or 4 inches of snow was dry and cold (13 F), so a bit soft and slow but beautiful to be in the woods and on the trails at Lester.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Classic tracks were set a few days ago and are currently littered with a non trivial amount twigs. The skate deck was just groomed in the last day and is in excellent shape. If you are dead set on skiing in the tracks, I would brings B skis, but otherwise I would recommend A skis if you are skating or kicking outside the track.

Classic skied the main trail (A through H) and D loop. Skate lane was freshly groomed this morning and was great for the whole course. Classic tracks were 85% good, some washout and a few sections (particularly A loop) with fair amount of needles, leaves, and twigs in the track. Tracks were firm and generally good depth, hard, but not icy. Great job clearing the downed trees from the summer storm! Lester is alive and well!
