Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 6 to 15 of 18    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Oct
Sunday, February 28, 2016
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: After the unseasonably 50 degree weather on saturday, the trails were in great shape. The night before the temperature dropped below freezing, the wind picked up and there was a slight dusting of snow. Underneath the fluffy snow there was a firm and fast ice deck. Overall a great day for skiing!
Some debris had blown on the trail including a big tree. See photos.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Fresh courderoy consisting of powder mixed with the ice. Hard packed but not icy on the surface. Classic track has some ice on the bottom.
Perfect spring conditions. The trail is hard packed after a tilling on Thursday or Friday. The trail did not melt much today despite the warm temps in the late afternoon. Skating should be great in the morning.

Excellent. Freshly groomed, firm not icy, fast. Tracks looked great. Just another duluth xc gem.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: In good shape for skating and classic; needs grooming.
Magney hasn't been groomed for a week and could use it, but the skating was good and classic track looked mostly intact. Saw one small icy patch and one exposed rock. There are several uneven/bumpy sections and some sections where the skate lane is too narrow to avoid skiing over the tracks. So, not wide flat corduroy, but I had a very enjoyable ski.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Pretty good. No grooming since last snowfall so had about 1-2" of fresh skied-in powder.
Enjoyed the skate ski from Spirit to Magney (see other report). Be a little careful with the connector (there's some good "moguls" on both sides of the snowmobile trail on the bottom). Magney had pretty good coverage, but there were a few icy and uneven areas, particularly at the bottom of some of the downhills. There were a few sections with soft pole plants (maybe the groomer didn't pack down the trail evenly?) The classic track looked good for being moderately shallow and skied in.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Groomed on Friday with a smaller machine.
Much better with the recent snow than it was two weeks ago. The track was decent although the bottom caved away in places. The downhills are safer but pay attention for some remaining ravines across the trail at the bottoms of hills and scattered dirt and rocks.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Freshly groomed, soft.
The city groomer had just finished when I arrived. I skated the first ~1k to the intersection then decided to go to Spirit instead so the trail could firm up. A guy had just finished classic skiing and said coverage is great, just soft.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good classic; mostly good skate - but beware of hill bottoms (ice/open spots).
I skated, and the trail was 98 % great; amazing grooming for how much snow there. Some unevenness of the deck in spots and some dangerous open cracks/spots at bottoms of some hills (can't see them from the top of the hill.... especially at ~ 2 km from the end). Had to ski edges of these icy/open spots to get across, and with hard packed snow, it's fast and hard to stop when you see the problem. Worth skiing, but beware!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Quite variable. Good to poor for classic, fair to poor for skate.
I enjoyed my classic ski at Magney because it was a beautiful day and only my 4th ski of the season (I'm still excited just to have snow). The track was OK for much of the system, but there were also holes and a few open-water spots. Would not have been fun to be skating; skate lane is super uneven and bumpy in many sections.
