Trail Reports

2017-2018 season
Reports 23 to 32 of 54    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Rock skis ]
Terrible conditions as of 3:00 pm on Monday. Icy, rutted and many bald spots. The new snow is windswept, offering only intermittent patches. Skiing is not advisable without more snow and until the groomer is working again. Beware of the abandoned snowmachine in the middle of the tracks on the NE corner of the loop. There appears to be sufficient snow depth in the park to reroute the worst spots. Hoping that more consistent grooming will keep the trail in action. Unless this is your neighborhood option, consider another course this afternoon.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomer is fixed so put down a nice fresh track for classic and skate. 1k, 2k and 4k loops all look good. A few spots of grass poking through, but these are easily avoided. Sunday Feb 18 there will be a youth event on Hiawatha course from about 1p to 5p.

Not groomed since re-freeze. Classic track looked OK (better than Wood Lake). Skate lane was mostly good. There were a few bare spots you had to navigate around. Not good if you are skiing in the dark. Try and hit when not too warm, many places the deck was thin.

Trail conditions in this report are as of 6:30 a.m. today. I am a novice classic skier and first-time trail reporter--so take this report for what it is worth.
The main trail and mixed use trails hadn't been re-groomed yet during early morning run. The big loop did survive the warm up though. The usual thin and bare spots are more pronounced, but easy to avoid as there is plenty of snow depth to trek around the worst spots. Do watch out for the exposed gravel path a few hundred meters into the main loop. The trail is a bit rutted and slick in some spots, but I was able to get some kick. The classic tracks were OK--icy in some places, avoidable bare spots elsewhere, and occasional grass poking through.
There seems to be decent snow depth just off the main trail for some crusty touring.

The pre-dawn light is increasing, and I don't really need the headlamp except for set-up in the 6 a.m. hour. The classic trail is very nice, with minimal leaf-clutter throughout. And thanks for clipping the fence twigs that used to whap my face along the trail! (I kept forgetting my clippers!).

Grooming

Groomed the 1k, 2k and 4k loops yesterday. Minimal bare ground, maybe 1 or 2 spots that can easily be avoided. Classic tracks are down for the full loop.

Grooming

Just groomed the trail and previous report still applies. Not a skier, but trail seems to be holding up and moderately firm. Keep meaning to cut the overhanging branches, but forgot the snips once again. Enjoy.

Hiawatha is in pretty good condition. There are a few dirty/icy patches but they are easy to avoid. Classic tracks held up through the whole course with just a few washed out patches. Watch out for a few low hanging branches!

Night
Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skate deck was groomed, and the practice area is set with classic tracks. There are 5-6 avoidable icy spots on the course, but it is otherwise hard packed with a decent classic track.

We groomed Hiawatha tonight including one pass on the multi-use trail. The new snow covered up all but a few of the grassy spots. We should be able to set the classic track tomorrow. The old classic trail was skied in.
