Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 11 to 19 of 19    Month: Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, January 16, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair to good for skate, no classic track.
I skied all the trails and there is 100% coverage. The skate deck varies from flat to bumpy due to the low amount of snow. I only saw one spot with dirt/rocks which was the first uphill on south America (prairie overlook trail). There is not enough snow to set a classic track. Looks like the trails were groomed several days ago. The snow is hard packed but not icy. Some of the downhill's off of South America were a challenge due to the bumpy skate deck.

Another fantastic day of skiing at William O'Brien. -15F according to my phone app, perfect day. Saw 5 people the whole time. Groomed to perfection. Great day!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Snow covered and hard packed.
I skied most of the outer loop and was impressed by how skiable it is...there were some exposed rocks and had I been more agile I could have avoided all of them...as usual it was good to be out on the trail and am hoping for a few more inches so they can groom...

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Hard-packed skating. Shallow x-ski tracks made by skiers like myself only :-).
5 stars! Phenomenal day of skiing. I was on 23 year-old waxless! SUPER fast, only a couple of bare spots. Climb, climb, climb...then...get a long reward on long, long, long gliding hill. Fabulous day at William O'Brien indeed. Many many kids in school, but only on the loop at Lodge. Trails almost empty.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed and bumpy.
There is enough snow to ski. It's thin under the pine trees by the campground. Some nice people shoveled a path under the tunnel. The top of the last hill (Suicide) has rocks that left a mark. The rest of the trail is well covered and bumpy. I was more happy to make it to the bottom of the big hills than I was to get to the top. No classic tracks to speak of. If faint of heart, stay off the outer loops. With caution, a fun ski can be had.

Observation
Conditions: Sunny, brisk west wind. Trail was frozen firm with a little twig litter. I used grey Asolos.
I hiked the Rolling Hills Savanna and Prairie Overlook trails. Trails were in great condition if only we had snow. Did 3.1 miles in an hour.
