Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Great skating both today and yesterday. Tracks were a bit icy in sections, but with skin skis, we had lots of fun anyway both days.

[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
This morning we groomed all the skate lanes, they are flat, firm, and fast with a nice surface texture. The classic tracks on the skate/classic trails are still in good condition. I’ll tell you straight the trails are mostly in great shape but until we get new snow you will experience variability in the surface depending on how warm any section got on Sunday. Half the trails ski like normal winter conditions (dry firm snow) but you may discover a section with groomed micro-ice particles right next to it. As I said earlier there is a surface layer of groomed snow on a firm base everywhere, the difference is the composition of the groomed layer. The classic track was reset on Raven, Deer Path, Black Bear, and Oppedahl’s.

Absolutely fantastic ski at Mt. Ashwabay! Classic skiing (blue extra) on all trails today. Some tracks are fresh, some a day or two old, and all in great condition. Every trail was wide, firm, and clean. Does not get any better - this is the kind of ski I will dream of in July.

Good Day Skiers, it’s 32º and overcast with 4-5 inches of new snow this morning. Today we packed and set a track on Sugarbush and Oppedahl’s. We also groomed and set a track on Telford, Beginners Loop, lower Dog Road Entrance, Lower Seagull, most of Abbey Road, Anchor, Switch Back, Power Line, and Roller Coaster.

50 some years ago Doc Telford and friends started Cross Country skiing at Mt. Ashwabay. Countless hours of trail work, contributions of hundreds of people, and lots of snow allows me today to take a picture of an almost perfect trail. Note the snow bank on the left. It may look perfect but it’s still a little on the soft side until we groom again. As of Tuesday night (after lots of work by many volunteers) all the trails except for Jolly, Skid Road, Deer Path, and Black Bear are groomed and tracked. Most will ski very well, some softer than others but we are getting just a little spoiled this year.
