Grooming [ Trails Open: Most, ]

After a repair to the sled I was able to continue grooming the system late this afternoon. I reset the blue, classic only trail, and moved the tracks. They are a bit crumbly but should set and ski in well. It was three feet of powder a few days ago and you will be able to tell. I left the one big descent (clockwise skiing) untracked to make room for snowplowing. The yellow trail now has classic tracks set around the whole exterior out to the third loop. The yellow trail will probably be your best classic skiing as the majority of the track is really nice. I also redressed the whole skate deck. The third loop was also powder a few days ago and you can tell. There are waves and weird bumps occasionally but the deck is firm. The snowshoe trail has been getting a great deal of use and great reviews as well.

I rolled and groomed the third loop several times and it seems to have a pretty firm deck. Our groomer had an issue and I couldn't conclude the grooming across the rest of the system. We were able to roll and put on initial groom of the classic only trail yesterday. I was hoping to groom it again today to clean up the track but technical issues stood in the way. Hopefully, in the next few days we can get everything bit the outer loop and the Barnes road trailhead in great shape for both striders and skaters. It has been a very challenging season thus far and we really appreciate everyone's patience. Our goal is to have the whole system groomed for classic and skate shortly. Special thanks to the backcountry skiers that were skiing the outer loops. Their compaction made it much easier to the snowmobile through.

After touring the Hayward Hospital Trails, Joanie and I skated and strided the 3.5k first two loops of this trail system. The trail had been freshly groomed on Friday and the skate lane and tracks were solid and in great condition. There are several loops that are still being cleared to reopen in the near future. Thanks to the groomer for the outstanding conditions and for your report on SkinnySki on Friday.

I rolled and groomed out to the second cutoff for both classic and skate today. The snowmobile had a slight issue that slowed us down a bit this week. After a cold night tonight they should be fantastic tomorrow on. Expect a little debris here and there and a few places where ducking will be needed. We are close to rolling and grooming out to the third cutoff and the classic only trail and expect to have them going by next weekend. The final loop out to the Barnes road trailhead is going to be a big project. There is a large stretch of clearing to be done on the outbound section starting at Moore Road. Volunteers are welcome to snowshoe in and clear with loppers and saws!

Skied the classic trail at Tomahawk this morning. About 1/2 of the trail system was rolled and tracked. Classic trail was nicely set and fairly solid. Every once in a while a pole plant would go in deeply but still a great, fun ski. Skate trail was rolled and should be really nice once it sets up.

I classic skied the trails on Saturday and Sunday. Hats off to the groomers! The track was in pretty good shape for the amount of snow. A couple of thin spots under the pines in places, but nothing you can't avoid. Someone drove their 4x4 a bit on the far point of the yellow trail, so there are some ruts, again easily avoided. The skate deck looked really good. I would say you could use your Agood skis when skating.

I groomed the entire system this afternoon. Good early season conditions but suggesting B skis if you have them. The skate deck on everything but the trails between Bobcat Byway and the Barnes Rd. Trailhead should be nice and firm after setting up. There are classic tracks on everything but the snow depth variation makes for variable conditions. The classic only Blue trail took a track nicely and should be good tomorrow. I was grooming out tire tracks by the Barnes Road trailhead so those are very soft and rough at the moment. If you enjoy snowshoeing, we have extended another loop on out trail adding about .8 of a mile to the existing trail. Our ski trails welcome dogs and skijoring once the snow is set up.

Our ski was more like a nature hike given the lack of classic tracks and warm day. Still lovely and better than fretting and waiting for perfect conditions. Definitely don't think it's a legit skate skiing situation, though, at least until the deck firms up. Have you ever seen beaver tracks in the snow? Check out the photo.
