Notes

Some of the best trails in southern Minnesota. Tucked in the valley behind the school, the trails run around the northern slopes of the valley making them quite challenging and also well protected from the sun. Some lighted sections, and snowmaking operations.

Excellent late season conditions, especially for skating! The 5K trail and upper trails were rolled for skating this morning. Unfortunately, we were unable to re-set the classic track on the 5K loop as the snow was just too wet for the ginzu groomer to handle. Most of the 5K classic track remains from yesterday, just covered in a couple inches of new snow. Get out if you can and enjoy the skiing!

5K trail was fully groomed and tracked this morning. Upper trail was packed and plan is to groom it up tomorrow morning. As we get colder conditions, the deck should harden up nicely and stick around for a bit. Open sunny areas will start to deteriorate quickly, but the shaded trails have a deep base. Get out and ski while you can, it doesn't get better than it was today.

Thanks to Mother Nature and the groomers for another weekend of skiing! Trails were in great shape this morning. Should be good through the weekend though the end of the season is quickly approaching.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
We received about 6 inches of snow last night. I rolled a modified 5K loop this morning. Once this sets up overnight, I plan to re-groom Saturday morning for skating and also try to set a classic track. The trail will be soft today. Continue to use caution for ice underneath the new snow. Get out this weekend and enjoy!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
The 5K loop was groomed for skating this morning. The trail has deteriorated a bit more since yesterday, with a few more icy/wet spots. Skating conditions are fair. Some classic track remains, but the track is icy and in poor condition. Ski with caution and watch out for ice. Light grooming may continue this week to try to maintain the trail for the possibility of more snow. With luck, we might get an opportunity for a bit more late season skiing.

A modified version of the 5K loop (to avoid steep hills) was groomed for skating this morning. The skate track is fair to good, but caution is needed as it remains very icy in spots. The classic track is intact on most of the 5K loop, but it is very icy.

Great conditions today The main 5K and river trails are groomed for skate and classic. The upper trail is groomed for skate. It may be a bit soft but who cares, it's great skiing !

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Groomers were out on main 5k loop as I was skiing this afternoon. Most other trails haven't been touched yet since the new snow this week. Trails were very soft and slow going but it was good to be out on fresh snow. Trails should improve as they set but in the meantime expect to work really hard to push through the soft stuff.

Went out after the snow stopped with my classic fish scale skis expecting to having to "bushwhack" on the trails. Main trail was groomed. No classic tracks. Soft but very skiable. When this firms up, might be some of the best skiing of the season. Not sure who did the grooming but "thank you". For everyone who uses the trails: please consider making a financial contribution to the Winona Nordic Ski Club. This is a non-profit group that relies on donations to fund trail maintenance. All the grooming is done by volunteers. I have skied many trails in the metro area and elsewhere. I have never seen a trail maintained any better than what we have here.

11"+ for the Winona metro. Only had time to roll and level the 5k, 1k, River and Orchard. It will be soft but you'll have the trail to yourself probably with everyone heading north. Grooming plans: Expect a full groom after the weekend with the big rig!
