Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 41    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Amazingly perfect! Still almost fresh corduroy from grooming 2-3 days prior. Firm and fast if done skiing by approx. 1 p.m. After that it gets a touch soft but still very good.
Began skiing at Bearskin Lodge and was not disappointed in any way. I can't believe I've not "discovered" this trail system in its entirety before, having only experienced the trail used in high school races. It's perhaps the most beautiful trail I've ever skied and the flow is incredibly fun. Conditions were better than most trails ever get at any point in their season, totally worth the drive and then some if these conditions persist.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Heavenly skiing all morning on Ridge Run, Summer Home Road, and Beaver Dam. All had excellent grooming for both Classic and Skate. Bear Cub World Cup with 1" of new snow on top of meticulously groomed base was a wonderful experience.
Easter Sunday-Heavenly skiing all morning and early afternoon again! This is the best Spring skiing we have ever experienced. Everything was perfect! With favorable weather we should enjoy another week of great skiing! If you love to ski, you have to experience this. Service was held on Ridge Run.

Conditions: Excellent spring skiing.
Excellent spring skiing for another day. This begins the 4th month of fantastic snow and skiing in this location. Terrific snow, scenery, trails and hosts. Only exception were moose tracks on one trail, but - we got to see 3 moose who had just left the ski trail! This was an extra treat!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Still a great base and excellent skiing! As we were leaving today Bearskin had just started to re-groom the start of the trail system.
Still no moose spotted today but lots of tracks and "other" signs dropped along the trailside. Eagles everywhere, and birds singing all day long. Beautiful!

Conditions: Excellent - except for a few moose tracks on small part of Beaver Dam.
Third month of fantastic skiing! Put your rollerskis away and come on up. Snow country! Spring skiing at its best. Should last for a while. Great snow, great trails, great grooming, great hospitality, and excellent accommodations. It does not get any better!

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Excellent all groomed corduroy skate lane with great classic tracks.
Drove up from the cities and skied the Central Gunflint trail system today. No one up here and by far the best skiing of the year. Sunshine 33 degrees, if you love skiing you gotta get up here - will last for a long time.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Skate skied this morning Base was firm with soft powder on top - not slushy at all. By noon it was still great. Headed out to try traditional skiing this afternoon.
Lots of moose tracks all over the trails - unfortunately no sighting, but we did spot an eagle perched near the nest. Bearskin grooming is fantastic and the beautiful sunny days just keep getting better and better!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Spectacular trails, grooming and scenery. Arrived in the afternoon so we decided to do traditional skiing today but could have also done skate without a problem. Both were groomed and in good shape. There is plenty of snow and just the occasional moose tracks to ski over.
Get in your car and drive - this is where it's at!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Excellent - best skiing in ages.
12 inches of wet, warm, sticky snow fell Wednesday but Bearskin groomed overnight so Thursday was good. A bit slow in the morning but fast by the evening ski. Today was glorious. Some more trails were groomed by this morning. Sunshine, blue sky and awesome tracks (thanks Bearskin!!).

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Excellent/very good: I skied from 11 am to 2 pm. Most trails set this morning, some set yesterday had 1/2 snow in tracks.
What a joy to have 12 inches fall, and have the owners of Bearskin set some trails. Who would have known after warm days our 12 inches was easy to make skiing great again. Temp 19 when I got there, 29 when I left (sunny whole time). VR40 worked well in tracks set today. Yesterday's set trails had a bit of new snow in the tracks (caused some sticking).
