Notes

With trails from beginners to expert and a very modern, heated trail center, Wild River State Park is one of the hidden gems for cross-country skiing in eastern Minnesota. The Aspen Knob loop is extremely challenging.

Waxless classics on Mitigwaki and Old Logging trail. Very good snow conditions, the track is starting to accumulate oak leaves and debris after the winds of late. What a great year for snow, too bad it can't last.

Ungroomed, but still a good day. Because I love skiing at Wild River SP and haven't been there for three years, I decided to be optimistic that the Mar 12 trail grooming "as time and conditions permit" mentioned on the DNR trail conditions site actually occurred. Sadly this was not the case. It appears that some (all?) upland trails have been graded, but no tracks set. The DNR site now says maybe they'll groom on Mar 17th. So I used my hok skis and skied in the groomer tread track on Mitigwaki Loop and then skied in my own track on the Dry Creek Trail. The snow was lovely, but anywhere in the open was so wet my skis caked up, so I didn't get down to the river. It's a real shame the trails weren't groomed - it was a glorious day, 30 F and sunny, the only sounds the occasional tapping of woodpeckers or calls from geese and swans on the river. Hopefully the trails are groomed this weekend.

Epic snow conditions, groomer had started packing and said they would set track tomorrow if all goes well. Kudos for him to stop and give me an update!

The classic trails were groomed both Saturday and Sunday and in excellent condition. I skied 12 miles of the outer loops and found a few areas with ice but 97% of the trails were in great condition. By late afternoon there were some areas where the trials were pretty soft but the groomed tracks were holding up well. The trails were also very clean for March skiing. Great job Wild River groomers!

The groomers have just started to roll the trails when I got there. Some people have started a track on most trails but I had to do the Deer Creek Trail; it was a lot of work but it was beautiful out there.

The trails were decent despite temps in the mid 40s today. A bit more icy and degraded than yesterday, but still very skiable. There was more leaf and stick litter on the Mitigwaki Loop. Best conditions on the bike trail portion, and iciest under areas below the pines.

With a fresh inch of snow and temps around 32F, I was pleasantly surprised at conditions. I skied the Deer Creek Loop from the Visitor Center. Thankfully other skiers had already worked in the new snow. It was an easy glide--not sticky and not icy. The texture was like a snow cone. It wasn't until the tail end of my trip out in the prairie section of the loop where the tracks got softer and the walls of the track washed out from time to time. Saw a handful of swans on the Wisconsin side from the river access, and a few more near the log shelter on the river side of the loop.

I skied a loop from the trail center Amador prairie to Trillium trail, to Old Logging Road, taking the north part of Mitigwaki loop back to trail center and trails were great!

First time at this park, very impressed - so many trails and trails are well-marked. Tried out Old Logging Trail and Mitigwaki loop, trails are well-groomed for classic with two tracks, nice for skiing with a partner. No debris on trails and no human footprints either! Quite a few wildlife tracks, saw a few deer on the trail. Some areas are getting a little out of shape due to use but still very enjoyable. I'll definitely be going back to this one! Thanks to the park staff and groomers for making such an enjoyable track for skiing!

Skied south trails: Pioneer, Deer Creek, Dry Creek. Magnificent hoar-frosted forest and bountiful fresh animal tracks. Very good double-track set. Steeper sections are hard surface and fast, sometimes rough. A bonus to briefly hangout at the trail center while the MN Youth Ski League families started showing up near 2 PM.
