Notes

Some of the best trails in southern Minnesota. Tucked in the valley behind the school, the trails run around the northern slopes of the valley making them quite challenging and also well protected from the sun. Some lighted sections, and snowmaking operations.

Great conditions today The main 5K and river trails are groomed for skate and classic. The upper trail is groomed for skate. It may be a bit soft but who cares, it's great skiing !

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Groomers were out on main 5k loop as I was skiing this afternoon. Most other trails haven't been touched yet since the new snow this week. Trails were very soft and slow going but it was good to be out on fresh snow. Trails should improve as they set but in the meantime expect to work really hard to push through the soft stuff.

Evening
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Went out after the snow stopped with my classic fish scale skis expecting to having to "bushwhack" on the trails. Main trail was groomed. No classic tracks. Soft but very skiable. When this firms up, might be some of the best skiing of the season. Not sure who did the grooming but "thank you". For everyone who uses the trails: please consider making a financial contribution to the Winona Nordic Ski Club. This is a non-profit group that relies on donations to fund trail maintenance. All the grooming is done by volunteers. I have skied many trails in the metro area and elsewhere. I have never seen a trail maintained any better than what we have here.

11"+ for the Winona metro. Only had time to roll and level the 5k, 1k, River and Orchard. It will be soft but you'll have the trail to yourself probably with everyone heading north. Grooming plans: Expect a full groom after the weekend with the big rig!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Round 1 of the storm was rolled this morning, except Upper/Rattlesnake. Everything will be rolled tomorrow/Thursday morning. Being Birkie week, trail may not see any more grooming until Sunday at the earliest. Be careful off trail as the new snow is atop of ice and sheets off easily! Otherwise, it will be soft for several days.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
The groomers turned the sheets of ice into a few k of skiable snow! Careful as you walk over all the ice to get to the trail, but it was good skiing.

Great job by the groomers to salvage some stretches of trail. Not ideal but definitely skiable this evening. Took a few loops on skate skies. Hoping for new snow soon!

Skied mid-day right as the groomers finished up. The recent rain has taken out a lot of the trails, but the Winona groomers have done a great job of keeping some trails open. It's about a 3k loop. Stay on the groomed trails. Thanks again to the grooming crew.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
After much Tilling, scratching, we came up with about 3K of skiing. Access is from Yon's valley, from the parking lot walk toward the sliding hill to access the runout we made when coming down from start area. The loop is up Hanarahan quick left down middle trail continue up banked corner straight to main 5K. Left ski main trail backwards to first cutoff and back dow Orchard trail to Oval and complete loop. There's a few short connectors to ski and some in the bowl. This was our best option, the rest of the trails are Boiler Plate don't venture off groomed trails!

Our trails took a big hit from the rain. Trails are not skiable. Tomorrow we'll see if we can salvage something and file another report.
