New Reports Report Requests

Notes

A great mix of beginner and expert ski trails. With the inclusion of the Jerry Jolly Trails there is about 25 km groomed for skating and classic. There is also an additional 15 km of classic only trails. With views of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, this is a very scenic area to ski. There is a nice lodge which sells snacks and food as well as a ski patrol and small downhill area.

Skied the Jolly long loop and then Northern Lights. There was a bit of fresh snow on top of groomed (slightly crusty from melting on Friday). It was fast and great!

Amy and I skied a bunch of the trails at Mt. Ashwabay, overall the conditions were great! We didn't do any of the classic-only trails, but they looked really good. Abbey Road, Northern Lights, and Buzz all had good tracks, and the skate deck looked amazing - might return in a couple days to skate :) Perfect Toko Red day.

Firsthand: Classic

Skied most of the classic only trails today, and conditions were great, nice and firm with good kick, and very fast. Kick wax changed rapidly as the trails got more skied in and it warmed up.

Trails are great with firm base under a fresh dusting. Some twigs on trail from recent heavy snow and winds, but not a problem.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic Observation
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Most of the trails have a fresh dusting of 1/2-1" of snow with some ice/crust underneath from yesterdays warm-up. Classic tracks skied very well with no ice. Skate deck had a few more crunchies. Deer Path had been freshly tracked today. I believe the groomers were also going to track lower sugarbush and Oppedahl's Alley today otherwise no fresh grooming noticed as of 3:00PM.

Classic skied the same 42 km as yesterday. Tracks are pretty good still. There was a dusting of snow which made for slower glide on the fresh areas. Kick was great. Hill climbs were a little less easy as the warm temperatures yesterday and freeze iced up the snow, but the new snow gave grip needed to get it done. All hills were doable in the tracks and herringboning. Could use a grooming. All trails are not groomed to full potential yet. Awesome ski! Fyi a nice young lady was checking passes at the entrance. Haha she almost tackled me before I went out, then again after the 42 km. Sorry, I can't talk or think straight after a hard ski of that distance. I got my pass printed for next time.

Classic xc skiing had and has a huge part in my recovery. Today conditions here were unbelievable from a classic perspective. Skied 42 km and it felt like 26 km. Tracks were deep, grip was great, glide was off the hook with swix red. Double-poling was excellent. All hill climbs were kickable, or if you herringboned the skate deck was firm soft, easing you up the climbs. I guess it was one of those days you could just get in a cardio zone, trust the groomers, ski all the hills and everything in-between. Or if you're new, an excellent day with great conditions to learn. Excellent Birkie training! Keep that up groomers! Thank you!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Are trails are in great shape thanks to hard work from our volunteer groomers and Harold our new BR400 Bombarider. All skate lanes have been cleaned up today. Classic trails have been double trackpacked and double dragged. Only sugarbush has tracks set.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Conditions were possibly the best I have ever seen at Ashwabay. Skied out Abbey Rd, up Seagull, and back around Northern lights past the cabin. (heard the the Buzz was groomed too). All was firm and flat in the skate lanes and tracks looked good. It was 20 and drizzling when I left!

Skated 15+K across the system today, including Abbey Road, beginner's loop, Anchor, Northern Lights, and the Buzz. Jolly Long and Skid Road have not been groomed recently, and the classic-only trails also looked like they could use a regrooming (lots of snow covering the tracks). Most of the route was well done with the PB, sans a few areas where it couldn't reach. We even had fresh tracks on most of Northern Lights and the Buzz. Conditions are good, but there are definitely spots of sticks and patches of needles every now and then. Heavier/stronger skiers may punch through the deeper snow in sections, and there are a few slow spots due to snow variation. All in all well worth it, and much appreciation to the groomers!
