Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 29 to 38 of 55    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Plenty of new snow, trails are in very good condition but still a little soft so they are a little slow. The groomer is out and the trails should be even better after they can make a few more passes. Great morning to be out.

Conditions were a bit soft on the skate deck this afternoon, but great. The groomer was still out at 2:30pm and had made a few passes. Tracks had been partially set (not sure if more was set after I left).

The groomer had made several passes in the vicinity of the chalet by noon today but the snow is very soft and requires more grooming and more skiers! No tracks set. The 6+ inches of new snow will take a while to firm up.

Nice skiing, there was a little bit of debris in some places. Out further, there was some odd grooming, where there were bumps, intentional, and I would think to help when it snows again. It was a little harder to ski on, but never lasted for very long. Overall, great experience!

Conditions were a heck of a lot better than in the Cities. Yes, there may have been some washboard in spots but it was inconsequential for a slower recreational skater like me. There was full coverage and no trouble getting bite. At 7 or 8 degrees at start and 12 at the end, it was slow for me. ( Did 5.5 miles in 1:10.) I used Fastwax Teal (old color scheme) LF. There was minimal litter. First time this season I saw a consistent classic track. Lots of skiers in the chalet and met a fair number on the trail.

My report yesterday was a bit inaccurate. There are long stretches were the grooming on Friday left a washboard effect that were not erased by yesterday's grooming. The entire lower loop (number 65 etc, aka "The old 'I' loop") has the washboard grooming. Although there is often enough room alongside that one washboard groomer pass to skate without having to utilize much of the washboard. The classic tracks are still delightful if you lift your ski over the oak leaves and other occasional debris.

All trails were groomed today and almost all of yesterday's washboard stretches were smoothed over. The groomer left behind a corduroy of granular snow that was very fast (especially downwind!) with excellent edge control. Surprising how fast it was given the cold temperatures. The classic tracks were not touched but are hard and fast, of course except for the usual Tower Ridge classical skiing nemesis: oak leaves. 100% glide wax on classic skis and all double poling and kick double poling was fast.

The hard pack on the main trails was scuffed up late this afternoon with a single pass of the groomer. The grooming machine left a washboard of granular snow: skiable with decent edging but clearly something wrong with the equipment, or maybe it is a physics experiment because only 50% of your ski is in contact with the snow at any one time. The trails near the chalet are very hard boiler plate. The classic tracks are firm but have a light distribution of pine needles throughout and the usual occasional stretches of oak leaves.

At 1:00 today the groomer was still working. The skating deck was fairly thick and firm and only very occasional darkish passages from the underlying ice or forest litter. Excellent edging. The tracks were freshly set and firm, but in the wind the oak leaves were already covering some stretches. Snow is still too shallow on some of the steep hills to set a track. All in all, excellent skiing.

Firsthand: Freestyle Observation
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
A few inches of fresh snow made the trails very good. The groomer is out right now and has been on most of the trails and is continuing to make more passes to widen them. Great day to be outside on the trails!
