Notes

The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
The classic track is still in surprisingly good shape at Lester, especially on the upper loops, and there are only a couple of impassable bare spots. The skate lane has been heavily used by hikers, bikers, and dogs, especially on the lower loops, but I think you could still skate it if you had low expectations.

[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
I skied Lester early this morning and it was lovely (especially considering that it hasn't been groomed in almost two weeks). The inch or so of new snow was just what the doctor ordered. Still have to be very careful of (walk across) the bare spots on the hill just before the main parking lot along Seven Bridges Road, and as you head down the hill right before A. Surprisingly wasn't too slow despite the new snow and 10F temps.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Trails in good condition considering recent addition of 1-2 inches of new snow and the fact that the have not been groomed since Friday March 23. The mail trail is all skiable, with some obvious bare spots that you can readily ski around if you are paying attention. However, the corner at intersect A is not passable. Consider cutting off from O-> B and skip A. Classic track in good condition.

I set the classic tracks at Lester after the couple of inches we just received. Upper part better than lower parts - above B. Didn't go past H though, so not sure how the upper upper tracks are - skipped those due to experiencing ice last week. Watch for bare ground at F. All in all, still deep base, with nice powder from recent "storm.".

A beautiful afternoon skate ski on the trails of Lester Park Wednesday afternoon. After a quick loop (the trails were surprisingly fast in the warm weather - low 40s) from the chalet to junction "O" we looped back up to "H" then back down to the chalet. There were a few bare spots on south-facing hills, but there was sufficient snow cover to get around them. I used my "A" skis and they came through it fine. I would recommend "B", or even rock skis just to be on the safe side (but for me, "B" skis stand for 'Broken'). I'm sure the trails are hard and icy until they soften up in the afternoon warmth.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
There is still a lot of snow on the upper loops, and there's still a firm track. A few small bare spots are starting to open up, still easy to ski around. We didn't ski J. Between the time we got on the trail about 5:30 and the time we got back to the car around 6:30, a couple of hikers with very muddy feet did some real damage to the skate lane, starting just above "P." I don't know how far they went.

Crisp! It was 29 degrees and the trail was very firm but not icy. Groomed yesterday. Not much in the way of kick, but lots of glide. I skated a bit on my waxless classic skis, and I think skating would have been a better bet, but it was not bad for skiing on March 24. A couple of bare spots are opening up but most of the trail still has good coverage, with a firm, deep classic track. We skipped J and L.

[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Lester has been groomed. At Lester J loop, chalet loop and the lower loop to the playground area were not groomed.

Terrific spring skiing. The trail was groomed Thursday. It was 31 when we got there, 42 when we finished up, so conditions were variable, but it was not icy. We skipped the J loop because there were a couple of bare spots opening up there yesterday, but the rest of the trail still has lots of snow. There are three puddles you can't ski around: just before, during and just after the I loop. Tracks were still solid and deep as of this morning.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Classic skied the upper loops, as far down as B. Skipped J. There is still a ton of snow and the track is holding up remarkably well. The skate lane looked good, kind of melted back into smoothness, and looked like it would be very fun if the temperature was right. The puddles on and after the I loop were ice when we skied today, impossible to ski around.
