Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 8 to 17 of 22    Month: Feb | Jan | Dec
Tuesday, January 26, 2016
Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: A few thin spots but overall pretty great.
It was a beautiful night and the cord was fresh and even. It made me wonder where all the other skiers were -- I had the whole place to myself at 7 pm, with evidence of only two skaters having skied before me. Great job groomers, you are doing a lot with a little!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good. Freshly groomed skate deck and tracks looked good. Some exposed grass on crests of hills.
Great after-work ski at the U of MN golf course. Kudos to the groomers for the great job. Nice to have this convenient ski option.

Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: I'd say good. Soft snow, groomed since last snowfall. Nice soft surface. A bit of grass and sticks poking through, particularly over the crests of hills, but nothing I couldn't avoid. I used B skis. Obviously could use some more snow. Classic track is generally well defined. I skated but looked like it would be pretty good classic skiing.
Skied around 5 pm. I'm very impressed with what a great job the groomers have done with what is a relatively thin snow pack. I skied B skis but it's basically fine. A little bit of grass, and a couple very thin spots over the crest of some hills but if you adhere to the old adage, "if it aint white don't ski on it" you'll be fine. If I wanted to be super picky I guess I could point out that it's a little bit uneven -- but really a remarkably nice surface for the few inches we have. And the snow is quite soft so view the irregularity as an opportunity to work on your balance.. Even just a couple more inches would really make it amazing. Come on Ullr! Do us right.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Excellent to good, no more ruts, decent classic tracks.
Recently re-groomed, skate deck is flat and fast. I was doubtful on Monday that they could get classic tracks in but they proved me wrong with some nice, deep set classic tracks. Only a few thin spots you would have to jump out of the tracks. Nice work groomers!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Grooming of skate path eliminated most of the skied-in classic track, classic exists in places.
I'm a classic skier and won't try skiing here again until after the next snow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Firm but a little windblown. No diag tracks.
I skied all three loops at lunchtime today. Nice and firm for skating. No tracks for classic. Some bare spots but you can use your A skis. I did wipe out when I caught a ski in one of those ruts that are mentioned previously. The least rutted of the three loops is the western-most loop, where the rut-maker apparently skied in the opposite direction.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good to fair, rolled yesterday, firm today.
The rolled trail that was soft on Friday has firmed up nicely overnight. Some ruts from a skater that skied after the groomer yesterday but nothing unavoidable. If you pay attention in the thin areas (the dip in front of the parking lot and some uphills) and ski in the daylight you could use good skis. No classic tracks, unless you count the ones off the trail.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: fair skate deck but choppy and rutted.
I'd describe trail as no better than fair. On Friday morning it was pretty choppy with many 2-inch ruts from previous skiers and occasional berm in deck. Some uphills were mashed up. This is not criticism of grooming. Rather, this was first grooming of soft snow of variable depths. Trail hasn't been packed down by skiers and underlying snow was soft and prone to collapse. Warm temps Thursday afternoon caused some skiers to sink into soft deck. Some stretches are relatively smooth but overall I'd characterize skate deck as a first rough cut. The good news is it will get smoother and firmer with use and more passes with new grooming gizmo. Snow coverage was surprisingly good. There is some grass and dirt exposed, but nothing out of ordinary for all natural snow courses these days. Trying to choose between UM golf course and Como? I'd say Como is in better shape ride right now. But it's great to have this course back again and it will certainly improve soon.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good! Very good (complete) coverage for the vast majority of the skate deck. A few tops of blades of soft grass poking through in two sections. I used my good skis with no worries.
The best groomers in town are back in action! Skated for just a bit today after driving by and seeing the magic was back! I went around the eastern most loop twice. A tiny bit of grass showing through in two parts but I think the groomer is being modest calling the conditions "fair". I'd say at least "good!" So happy to have this place to ski. Bravo!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Still skied in classic track, a few thin spots with grass showing, a pleasant ski.
Spoke with grooming crew, they now have tneir equipment and were Preparing to groom. They said skate trail will be groomed and would try to do classic track, but didn't know if new tracking equipment would work with limited snow.
