[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied part of the Front 9, and all of Tornado Alley, JD Rivers and Eloise Butler. Trails are in good shape, with the new snow helping a lot. Good coverage throughout. In some places there are icy, rutted conditions under the new snow but not in a lot of places and it seems like these areas should get better with more grooming. I also skied the Judy loop -- although it had been groomed, it is quite icy and rutted underneath in many spots. Hoping this gets some attention before the race on Sunday.

Night
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied most of the trails south of Glenwood ave at 9pm. The trails most likely haven't been groomed since last weekends race. There were a couple of dirty, icy spots on downhills that had me taking me skis off and walking. Nice to ski the natural trails but you will have to dodge ice and dirt. Hopefully the light dusting of snow this morning helped.

Cleanest snow I've skied on at South Wirth in many years! I enjoyed several laps of the Eloise Butler loop and the Quaking Bog loop, as well as the Chain of Lakes (including the east and west land trails off Cedar Lake), and the snow coverage is fantastic throughout. I only saw one twig the entire time. Even the I-394 bridge crossing is the cleanest it's ever been! Brownie tunnel is also in good shape. The classic tracks are intermittent in Eloise Butler and the Bog, but present throughout most of the lakes. Brownie and Cedar were the best of the lakes; Lake of the Isles has a much narrower groomed surface; and the lake formerly known as Calhoun does not have much grooming, presumably due to the earlier report of snowmobile issues. Should be an excellent course for this Saturday's classic Loppet point-to-point races, and I'm super excited for the Super Bowl Sunday Loppet skate point to point races!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied the North Wirth trail east of the Parkway, J.D. Rivers, Wirth Lake, and Eloise Butler. Classic tracks in set only to Glenwood Ave., and in very good condition. South of Glenwood, it had obviously been rolled, but there were no classic tracks in Eloise Butler and the track was soft and well-chewed. Extremely good coverage, though. Quite and peaceful, especially with the snow mist that was falling.

While the Masters is happening in North With, South With is fully open and I almost felt like I was the only out. Skied Eloise Butler, Quaking Bog and Cedar Lake. The woods were awesome with solid grooming, snow still sticking to tree branches and conditions I haven't seen in years. Yes the snow was getting a little soft and it was a little slower than ideal, but you can go absolutely everywhere.

Skied everything on the south side today all the way over and including a lap on Little Brownie. Skate track was soft and classic tracks looked shallow, but fantastic to be on real snow. Major improvement over my foray into Eloise Butler a few weeks ago. Happy to say thet Saturday's Loppet won't be my first time through on the Big! Fun to be off the hamster wheel! Made it back just as the sun was setting...saw 3 different snowmobiles heading out as I was heading in! Thanks for all the great work grooming!

There were a handful of us out before noon compressing the fluffy snow in the Bog and enjoying the sunshine streaming down on our beautiful park. I passed the groomer as he was returning laying the classic track by Brownie Lake.

After finishing up two Masters World Cup races today at North Wirth I had time to go for a cool-down ski on the natural snow trails leading to South Wirth, just as the snow intensified. I made it around Eloise Butler and back to the chalet, and I can confirm with absolute certainty that there is enough snow to ski on the natural snow trails. It was also a bonus having the road crossings all covered in snow - I didn't even need to take my skis off to cross the roads! South Wirth should be back in action shortly, after a good grooming pass or two. Enjoy!

[ Rock skis ]
I skied Butler and Bog this morning. Both were marginally skiable. For me, going out there was worthwhile and I'm glad I went; I love these trails, and I'm happy to ski them even in borderline conditions. However, it did cost me a few dings in the rock skis. The downhill onto the pond before Anwatin School had a rocky/dirt spot across the width of the trail, and the downhill at the end of the Bog was more leaves than snow. Some sections were fine, or even good, but be ready for unavoidable bad spots. I imagine it may not be skiable after another warm day or two; it may have even already degraded since this morning.
