Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 4 to 13 of 14    Month: Feb | Jan | Dec
Thursday, January 28, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Icy and fast, skiing not recommended.
Afton was tracked earlier this week but thaw/refreeze has rendered it an ice rink. Downhills dangerous, uphills a treadmill. The north ascent was especially charming. I'll be snowshoeing til we get more snow!

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good, shallow tracks but good coverage.
Tracks were a bit shallow but present everywhere we skied. Unfortunately they have been pretty hammered by the dog walkers throughout. Lots of leaves. Nice trails and a nice ski, I can't imagine it gets much better than Afton in the metro right now! Where was everyone?

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good; skier tracked, not recently groomed.
The last 1-2" of snow has freshened the tracks, though they are still in need of grooming, which was last done a few weeks ago. There is some drifting on the south portion of the North Prairie loop but tracks are otherwise intact and the tree debris on the tracks is mostly covered. The river bottom ascents are less slippery and arduous. A once-over grooming could clean things up nicely for the weekend.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good to excellent. Groomed but some drifting.
Afton is fully groomed and tracked for the first time time in 2 years! Some drifting on north prairie loop. Ascents from river flats are hard packed but slippery. The rest is in really nice shape other than some intermittent hiker tracks. Only wish I'd stayed out a little longer and missed the end of the Vike's game. Thanks to Afton staff for the work!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Fast tracks, minimal debris most places, downhills to beach wide firm but not icy, rougher steeper up hills show rocks and roots. Still really nice skiing.
One of my favorite places to ski.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Very good! Still lots of snow...only a couple spots where grass was showing.
Trail conditions still very good. Despite people and dogs walking on them in some areas, there is still quite a bit of snow and the tracks are in good shape for classic. A great ski!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good. Heavily wooded trails by cabins had some bare spots, but are easily avoided. More snow than Lake Elmo right now. Snow was firm and not icy.
Trails leading to the river had a lot of foot traffic, but double tracked grooming had enough snow - tracks were deep and easy to ski.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Double tracked and well covered.
I enjoyed a beautiful classic ski today. The park groomers did a great job setting tracks and also pulling the track setter on the steeper hills. There were a couple of trails that had some gravel to watch for, such as the stretch from the campground to the upper prairie loop. It was a beautiful sunny day with great powder conditions. Thanks to the park staff.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic Secondhand
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good - fresh double track.
I started about an hour too early. First hour was on packed trails littered with hiker foot prints. On the decent to the river I ran into the groomer going the other way. He said he would track all the trails. The next 20 minutes were excellent for me. Fresh track and no footprints.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: poor to very good (probably very good overall soon).
Heavily hiker pockmarked corduroy when I first started about 9am. The North Prairie loop, river flats, and north ascent from the river were all poor, but by the time I finished out on North Prairie, firm and fast double tracks had been laid. I presume that they'll groom everything today. Great to finally get some skiing in.
