Reports 11 to 20 of 64    Month: Apr | Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Hit all trails at Baker from 1 to 3 pm. Deck was firm but not hard with a inch of new spongy snow on top. Not fast but not real slow either. Getting a little slower by the time I finished. Good workout, saw nobody out. Classic tracks didn't look bad but were getting filled in with new snow.

Full coverage and no ice. Tracks were frozen and grabby on my boots at 10 am but by noon was getting soft as was the skate deck, which I stayed on most of the time. Groomer still working on the inner trails at 11 am, which looked hardpacked/icy so I stayed on outer trails.

Skated all of the trails late morning and early afternoon. Very good condition overall, firm and fast. A bit icy in places, especially on the stretch out to the Island trail, but able to get an edge throughout.

Classic skied 10-12 today. Tracks are still in pretty good shape considering the recent rain and melting snow. Mostly deep and well defined. Had to be careful, watching ahead to navigate through a few carve outs on downhill runs evidently from when the temps were warm yesterday. With waxable skis, my V50 (purple) was mostly scoured off by the sugary ice within 5k. The ice made for superfast downhills with very little kick on uphills. Red wax or klister may have been a better choice for kick. Have fun out there.

Skating conditions were great and that was with my waxless classic skis. I was hoping they groomed last night after the refreeze but unfortunately they groomed yesterday morning after the wet snow. The tracks were well formed but the bases had no support so as soon as I applied pressure my boot went down and immediately got stuck frozen sides on the track. The skate deck was about as good as it gets. Very fast and firm but not icy at all. I only wish I had brought my skate skis.

As someone stated a few days back...Baker doesn't need a report because it always skis great. Skied towards dusk and was surprised how much the trail was skied. A bit of ice in the open areas, but most of it skied fast. Very enjoyable ski. Baker is always worth the trip.

The great thing about Baker is that you never have to check the trail reports. The trails are always in great shape. Now I know why. I arrived at 8:30am. The groomer was just finishing his rounds. He had started at 3am! Now that's dedication.

Skated all the trails except Timber and Prairie. Conditions were about as you'd expect: beautiful sunny day with plenty of snow, very well groomed, but a bit on the soft side. It was actually firmer than I thought it might be, but my pole went down through the snow multiple times, and some of the uphills were pretty chopped up from people making their way up. Great to have this much new snow though.

Conditions are consistent with the Three Rivers report. Island was the only loop I avoided due to the conditions. Fairway was the only loop tracked yesterday and grooming had just finished when I arrived, so I classic skied out of the tracks and it was fine. Skate deck was in good condition. Overall, trails were a bit soft but I imagine things firmed up nicely overnight.

After yesterday I had to get back out to Baker and enjoy the great conditions. Arrived a bit before 5pm and skied until dark. The trail made it through another day of sun and 40 degree temps. Trail was a bit more hard-packed, but still skiable. The areas with tree cover skied really well and you could always get an edge. Just amazed as we've had very little snow over the past three weeks and temps in the mid-40's. Get to Baker. It will ski great and fast!
