Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 7 to 16 of 108    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
Skied the upper stadium intermediate loop about five times. Surprisingly skiable, but it may not hold up to sun and rain. If you go this morning while it's cloudy it's still good. Saw classic tracks, that looked well defined, but didn't try them. Overall, the conditions were buttery, not potatoey. This intermediate skier logged their best pace of the entire season, further adding to the wackiness of the season.

With the new reports, I thought I'd give Wirth a shot. Was out about 7:30 pm and no one else on the trails. If you go at night, bring a headlamp as only about half of the lights are turned on. With the generally rough conditions it made it hard to see what I was skiing over.

Morning
Observation
Went to Wirth Saturday morning for a family ski, based on the trail report from Friday. A sign at the base of the big hill outside the main chalet said that the trails were closed for maintenance. I walked up the stairs and the upper stadium was groomed, but did not look to have been skied. I stopped by the Par 3 building and it was locked. No cars in the parking lot. The park board employee at the main chalet didn't know anything. I'm confused.

We did some work over the past two days to re-open the 1.3k Intermediate Loop portion of the Hap snowmaking trail. The upper stadium is also open and both are accessible from the chalet stairway.

[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
I attempted to ski the manmade course just before dawn. It may have been the most treacherous conditions I have ever encountered on a groomed trail. The Snirt was frozen rock hard, so hard and icy that edging was impossible. However there is also so much dirt frozen into the ice that it was impossible to glide on the bases at all. I enjoyed the absurdity of it all for about 10 minutes and then went back home. Try again when it is warmer... or better yet go for a roller ski.

Grooming Scheduling
[ Trails Open: Partial, Rock skis ]
After the continued warm temps and day of rain, we will stop grooming the Hap manmade loop until the weather changes. There is standing water in low areas and dirty snow most everywhere else.

Observation
Stopped by as I was driving through to take a pic. Observed very dirty snow with the snow going down fast in the hard rain at 12:45.

What a difference 24 hours can make. Yesterday's good conditions for the JNQ left me with the with some hope that I could get one more ski out of Theo today. It was not to be. Snow is extremely dirty with no glide; not productive skiing. I made it one time up the 'A' climb and called it quits.
