USCSA Nationals Wrap Up

NCAA: Freestyle
March 12, 2005The NCAA National Championships wrapped up on Saturday in Vermont with the womens 15K and mens 20K freestyle races. Lindsay Williams, NMU, continued her string of top performances placing 4th overall and first American. Mandy Kaempf, UAA, won the overall completing her sweep of the events. In the mens 20K, it was Denver's Rene Reisshauer completing his own sweep as he won again today. Other top results: Johann Turenen 8th, Kristina Owen 12th, Tami Kochen 15th; Jed Kallen-Brown 14th, Bret Bedard 16th, Bryan Cook 17th.

USCSA: Freestyle
March 10, 2005Nels Dyste reports: The second day of races at the USCSA National Championships in McCall, Idaho was beautiful. Clear skies and warm temperatures made for fast conditions in the morning for the women's race changing to increasingly slower for the mens event. The St. Olaf women dominated the field with Linn Dale taking 2nd in a sprint finish completing the 15k course in just under 47 minutes. Stephanie Block was 3rd, Bria Schurke 4th, Jennie Hedberg 7th and Maddie McCauley 16th. This pushed St.Olaf women into first place by 8 points. The St.Olaf men's team also won their race, though by only three points. Nate Erlandson was the top finisher for the Olaf team taking 2nd to St. Louis Park native John Erickson. Ollie Garrison was 5th ( w/ a broken pole!), Jake Boyce 6th, and Nels Dyste 14th. The Olaf team is the overall points leader over the University of Wyoming after the first two races.

March 10, 2005Day 1 of the NCAA Championships featured the womens 5K and mens 10K classical races. NMU's Lindsay Williams put an exclamation point on a phenomenal season finishing 2nd in the womens race, less than 10 seconds behind winner Mandy Kaempf of Alaska-Anchorage (a German native). In the mens race, Bryan Cook of NMU notched an excellent 5th place finish as the top US skier. Other top results: Kristina Owen 7th, Lindsey Weier 8th, Tami Kochen 11th; Jed Kallen-Brown 10th.

USCSA: Sprints
March 8, 2005Nels Dyste reports: The St.Olaf College Nordic team has been hard at work in McCall, Idaho at the United States College Ski Associations National Championships. The temperatures are very warm, sunny and clear. Without new snow in recent weeks, the snow is reaching it's minimum, but the grooming at Ponderosa State Park is top notch and has been doing a great job to make the best of the conditions. The St. Olaf team kicked off the week with a 1.5k skate sprint race on Tuesday. The Ole men had all four men finish in the top fifteen in the preliminaries. In the final, Nate Erlandson finished in 1st, Oliver Garrison 5th and Jake Boyce in 6th. The Olaf men finished in first place over the University of Wyoming. The Olaf Woman are also had three women in the finals with Linn Dale winning the title, Briaa Shurke in 7th and Jennie Hedberg in 8th place. The Olaf women finished in second place under the University of Wyoming. Wednesday teams will compete in a 15k mass start skate race and later this week in a 8.5k classic and a 3 skier relay.

NMU's Lindsey Weier reversed yesterday's results with teammate Tami Kochen as Weier won the womens 10K race by just under two seconds. February 12, 2005Camp Ripley is the site this weekend for the CCSA races with Saturday featuring the classical events. January 30, 2005The NorAms at Telemark wrapped up with exciting mass start freestyle races on Sunday. NMU's Lindsey Weier finally put the hammer down taking the womens overall 10K title as three more of her teammates, including Lindsay Williams, crowded the top five places. After winning the 51K Noquemanon classic on Saturday, Ivan Bakikov still had enough juice left over to take out the mens 15K field today. Other top midwest results: Maria Stuber 8th, Anna McLoon 9th; Chris Cook 10th.
Telemark NorAms: Classical
January 29, 2005The NorAms picked up again on Saturday at Telemark. While some top skiers were off racing in other major events, there was still a very competitive field. In the womens 10K overall, NMU had another dominated race capturing 4 of the top 6 places, including Tami Kochen as the overall winner. UAF's Thomas Oyberg beat out Chad Giese for the mens 10K overall title. Other top midwest results: Lindsay Williams 3rd, Lindsey Weier 6th, Anna McLoon 10th; Bryan Cook 4th, Chris Cook 6th, Andre Watt 10th.

January 23, 2005The Mt. Itasca NorAms wrapped up on Sunday with the interval start classical races. It was another set of fantastic results for the "L-train", Lindsay Williams and Lindsey Weier, as they topped the womens collegiate board. Williams lost the overall title by 1/3 of a second to Rossignol team's Karin Camenisch. Ivan Babikov won again for the men. Other top midwest results: Chris Cook 5th, Sean Crooks (Thunder Bay) 7th, Chad Giese 10th.
Mt. Itasca NorAms: Freestyle
January 22, 2005Ivan Babikov continues to be the man to beat on the National circuit, today winning the mens 10K freestyle race by a 30 second margin. Karin Camenisch was the womens winner, just ten seconds ahead of UAF's Johann Turunen. Top midwest results: Chad Giese 4th, John Bauer 5th, Chris Cook 8th, Matt Weier 9th; Lindsey Weier 3rd, Lindsay Williams 6th.
Grand View XC Freestyle Results
December 19, 2004Day 2 of the Grand View XC Challenge with competitors having to deal with fresh snowfall from Saturday in Sunday's freestyle event. Abigail Larson won the open class and posted the top womens time of the day. Bryan Cook led the college men and had the fastest time in the mens field. Other highlights: Forest Lake's Ben Fick won the J1 title; Claire Luby of St. Paul Central was 2nd in the girls J1. Photos added from Dave Tilman.
Grand View XC Classical Results
December 18, 2004Day 1 of the Grand View XC Challenge with skiers hitting the trails in classical format races. Lindsay Williams continued her impressive string of victories this season with a win in the college womens 5K, with teammate and friend Lindsey Weier just 3 seconds back. Andre Watt (UMD) posted the fastest mens 10K time. In the open class, Abigail Larson and Nikolai Anikin were champions.
Christmas Classic Results
December 12, 2004Christmas Classic: two days of racing on the Michigan Tech trail system. In Saturday's classical race, Lindsay Williams continued to her strong form this season with a victory in the womens 5K. The mens was also dominated by NMU skiers, but Duluth's Nikolai Anikin managed to crack the podium with a third place finish. Sunday's racing was a little more wide open without the presence of the NMU team. Krista Owen and Mikael Kilpela were the victors, with citizen racers Corey Coogan and Ken Wikgren taking third place finishes.
Collegiate: NMU Sweeps Opener
December 9, 2004Northern Michigan University took top honors in their opening weekend of racing action. Bret Bedard and Lindsay Williams posted the top collegiate times in Saturday's classical race. Williams again dominated in Sunday's skate race, with Ben Cline posting the top mens time.
