Trail Detail
Notes
A couple of good loops, although it seems to get more wind-blown than other metro trails. New in 2013, 5K snowmaking loop.Trail Reports

The snowmaking loop was in very good condiion at my 5:00 start. It was about 28 degrees and the moon was out briefly at my start, otherwise it was overcast. I was dumbfounded given the likely daytime weekend traffic but the sugar was light except at the top of the steeper climbs. Otherwise the snow was thankfully fast. There was brief boilerplate before the curve on the Boulder Ridge downhill which had two "lanes" separated by modest snowplow wake. Skier traffic was really light except for a bunch kids with bibs on Star and the start/end of Willow Creek who I had to dodge a few times as they skied across the trail in front of me. Thanks for a great job groomers.

Around noon it was as busy as I've ever seen here - lots of families out grooving on the snow. Conditions were good for classic - tracks were clean and not glazed, although the heavy use meant a few sections were getting sloppy. I mostly skied on the deck, due to crowding, and it was excellent, though probably a bit soft for skate skiers. A really nice day.

Snow conditions on all the man-made portions of the skate deck are about as good as they get! Started before dawn and the recently groomed course was in great shape all the way through, and not even too sugary on the steeper climbs. Fast and smooth skiing was to be had on a level deck, with only a pinch of deeper snow building up on a few tight corners close to the parking by about 8 am. The classic tracks were deep and fast, and alternated between pretty icy where there was the most traffic and snowy enough to get a grip on the uphills in the further reaches. Folks really started to roll in shortly after 8 am, so no photos today. Huge kudos to the groomers!

With the warmer snow and air (28 degrees) temperatures, the snowmaking loop was in very good condition. There was a modest amount of sugar on most of the trail with somewhat heavier accumulations on the Star, Willow Creek, outbound Scenic Foothills and the 1st part of the inbound Scenic Foothills cilmbs and just a brief bit of boilerplate before the curve on Boulder Ridge's downhill. The warmer, faster snow was a really welcome change, It was only the second time this season that I was able to skate all the climbs except Boulder Ridge and the transition between the 1st and 2nd parts of the Scenic Foothills inbound climbs.

Skied over the lunch hour and the snow was as good as it has been all season. Gorgeous blue skies and a touch of radiant heat coming off the snow. The snow was really great, awesome day for skiing.

The whole course of manmade snow is in pretty good condition. The usual sugar/sand on the hills but nothing terrible today. Happy to have this cooler weather, but would love some more natural snow.

At my 3:30 pm start, it was about 12 degrees, sunny with squeaky cold snow. Also, sugar covered the trail in the usual spots. Between that and the cold snow, I didn't move very fast until the final leg down from the top of Scenic Foothils where I was only held up briefly by the sugar on the Frog Town and Star climbs. There was no snowplow wake on the Boulder Ridge downhill. Only got crowded on a couple of the climbs where the faster skiers passed me by. At 72 I suppose I have to expect that. Thanks again groomers.
