A couple of good loops, although it seems to get more wind-blown than other metro trails. New in 2013, 5K snowmaking loop.Trail Reports

The snowmaking loop was in very good condition at my 6:00 pm start. There was some sugar throughout but it only got heavy towards the top of the outbound Willow Creek climb, the first part of the inbound Scenic Foothills climb and the last Star climb before the chalet cutoff. I estimated from my minivan thermometer that it was 20 to 21 degrees. The snow was fast and the crowd was very light. Thanks for the great work groomers.

Hyland skiing remarkably well today. Best I've seen it all season around noon with the some bonus sunshine out to brighten things up. Nice and firm with no sugar on the climbs.

The skate deck was very firm and fast from 5:30-7AM this morning. We are so fortunate to have groomers who work overnight and do such an amazing job! I was surprised that the skate deck was beginning to soften (in low (14 degree temperature) on certain uphills. Likely due to the 1 inch of snow we received overnight.

The snowmaking loop was in very good condition at my 1:30 pm start. It was 22 degrees with a slight south wind and an overcast sky. There was some moderate sugar buildup on the steeper parts of the Willow Creek and Scenic Foothills climbs outbound and on the first climb of Scenic Foothills inbound. But pretty light after that and the Boulder Ridge downhill was in excellent condition - no boilerplate. I came out with an older pair of skis waxed for the colder conditions only to find the bindings would not fit my newest pair of boots or my 2nd newest for that matter. So had to use my skis waxed for 23 degrees and above but to my delight they ran fine and I skied my fastest lap of the season. Wahoo. The crowd was light with lots of seniors. I felt like the youngster at 72.

The snowmaking loop was in good to very good condition at my 10:10 start. I would guess it was low to mid 30s at the start. A. moderate amount of wet sugar had accumulated on the last Willow Creek climb and on the outbound Scenic Foothills climb and the first part of the inbound Scenic Foothills climb. The inside of the Boulder Ridge downhill before the curve had been scrapped down to boilerplate but I had no trouble negotiating and carrying some speed into the flat. Despite the wet sugar on some of the climbs I matched my fastest pace for the season. Thanks to the groomers for providing good conditions despite the challenges of weekend skier traffic and the warm temperatures.

The snowmaking loop was in fair condition at my 10:45 start. There was heavy sugar through most of the trail except it eased up on the flat leading to the Boulder Ridge climb and onward from the downhill at the top Frogtown to the chalet. The inside of the curve on the Boulder Ridge downhill had been scrapped down to boilerplate and there was snowplow wake down the middle as there was on the curves on even some of the milder downhills. "Soft" rutting beyond the curve on the Boulder Ridge downhill (and a very competent skier falling down before me) had me holding a snowplow into the runout for stability. The sugar itself was fast but it's depth was tiring on the climbs. Skier traffic was reasonably light.

Went out from 9:15-10:15am. Trails were beat up from high traffic. Many uphills had a thick layer of churned up fluff. The steep downhills had build up from snowplowing. The classic tracks were fine but not crisp. But still, there is plenty of snow here and it is skiable for Birkie training.

Excellent conditions before first light this morning on all the open trails. Well groomed and no ruts to speak of, and a generally fast but not too hard skate deck. Little to no sugar buildup on a few of the uphills (Frog Town and beyond), and most of the nearer corners were holding up nicely. Huge thanks to the groomers for such a consistent and amazing job!
