Most of the trails are on the golf course, thus pretty open and fairly flat. The course really winds back and forth.

Lots of soft snow, old and new. Could ski most everywhere breaking trail. In flat late light old groomed trail barely visible. Thin atop NW corner. Good to see the snow! Saw two other skiers.

Skied Phalen late this afternoon and found that there is plenty of snow to set your own classic track or ski in the skied in tracks. The skate deck is still there, some is boiler plate but (where the race course went) is looser and pretty nice to skate on.

Firm but uneven base is still holding together well. Skate deck is getting packed in some places and in some sections it was tough to get a good edge. There are a few grassy, bare spots on hills both otherwise very skiable. Nice change of scenery from the machine made loops!

There are 4-5k of the trails that are quite good for what we have - high schools raced in the afternoon and shortened the trail in 3 places - where they raced they kept the snow fairly loose while temperatures fell. This section is fast and fun - thank you HS skiers. There are 3 hill crests that are very thin and some care is needed to navigate thru these very short stretches. The stretches not skied in are icy - they were skiable but not much fun, and probably too this for grooming to do anything useful. Classic looks like it would be fair to marginal on the skied-in sections, but poor on the icy sections.

We continue to see more bare ground at Phalen. There is still good snow cover for most of the trail but grass is definitely showing through - particularly on south facing slopes. The trail has become icy with the recent thaw and freeze cycle. Enjoy the trail but know that it will be better when we get more snow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Good snow cover remains at Phalen with more grass poking through that there was last week. Expect to see conditions deteriorate if the weather warms. The trails have not yet been rolled this week but remain well packed from last week. Use caution so as to not damage skis but enjoy!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
We were able to comb the trails over the weekend and they're available for use. With the quick thaw on Monday trails could get icy and there may be more bare spots until we get fresh snow. Please be careful and have fun.

Rolled again this morning and while thin, conditions are good considering the amount of snow. Very skiable. Did not leave any p-tex behind today!

There is a bit of grass poking through with some sticks and leaves. It didn't look like it had been rolled again but that may only be because of the tracks for a lot of skiers. There is also one spot where there is bare gravel / path but it is very small. With good judgement your equipment should not suffer any harm. All in all, it is in good shape!

Had a very pleasant night skate at Phalen on the full 7.5k loop. Conditions are thin - some grass showing on the crests of hills, some leaves in places, soft on maybe two short stretches, and you feel the paved paths through the crust with polls in 2-3 spots. Skiing without lights, under a cloud deck, visibility of the trail was generally good, but there are a few spots where lighting conditions make the trail merge with the surrounding and we needed to slow down and look hard to stay on track. Mostly a joy to be out there.
