Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 17 to 26 of 40    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Tuesday, January 31, 2017
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skate deck is soft and slow but freshly groomed with just a few manageable icy spots. There is a serviceable classic track in the open areas but nothing in the woods. At 20 minutes from the NW side, Fox Hills is the closest non-glacier skiing to Milwaukee. Well worth the $8 daily pass and a few hours playing hookey from work.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skate lanes were regroomed this evening and appear to be in very good condition. Classic tracks were set this morning but I would recommend waxless skis as there is ice and grass showing through in some spots.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Fox Hill is in very good condition throughout for skating. The skate deck has plenty of snow but will be a little soft until the new snow gets skied in and packed down. Colder overnight temps will also help. No track was set as of 4pm Friday, but Jerry was still grooming when I left. Thank you Jerry.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed yesterday, full coverage, no classic track, will regroomed this morning.
Sorry my report is "a bit short" but I tend to be more of a doer, than a talker.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Fox Hill Nordic continues to improve despite the lack of new snow. Groomer Jerry scarified the east, west, and fox loops in the wooded areas, meaning all 8.5K is opened up for skating. The skate deck is fast but stable as the scarifier is leveling the skate deck with little balls of snow which are acting as cushioned ball bearings. Jerry was going over the entire system as I skated this morning and reported to me that he'd be back out later today to go over it again as it softened up. Give Fox Hill a try! Membership information is at the trailhead or online. Thank you Jerry!

The woods loops, east, west, and fox were all groomed this afternoon. They have not been groomed since the meltdown and freeze four days ago. All the trails are in very good condition. No tracks set.

Skied here for the first time yesterday and again today. I've been skiing for over forty years and somehow never found this jewel! We found the coverage to be very good, I think better than southern kettles. Got in a great skating 20 k workout on great coverage. Jerry, the main groomer, told us to spread the word on this place and I'm giving this place an A for trail layout and I will be back to ski here when there is a few more inches of snow because it is not as long of drive as Greenbush but a great hill workout. The upper west and east loops were a bit dicey but the lower portion was fun and fast. If you are looking for a good workout try this place, you will be very surprised at the conditions. Hope I find a parking spot after this report!

Conditions remain very good at FHN for skating. Jerry recently scarified again. Fast yet stable. Fellow skier, Jon, ventured into the west loop and reported 100% coverage. More snow would open everything back up. Parking lot was full.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Fox Hill was groomed this morning and conditions are very good. Approximately 2/3 of the trails are open (about 6km): Upper and lower fields, lower prairie, Truck Lane, the Corkscrew and the connector trails are great for skating. No classic tracks set. West woods loops, Fox Loop, and the lower marsh loop are still closed. Best skied from the parking area on Sleeping Dragon Road.

The bulletproof base at Fox Hill has been aggressively scarified leaving a sugary top coat which provides some excellent purchase and allowed me to feel in control the entire time. I stayed out of the woods but the upper fields and prairie were in above average condition. B-skis if you have them, but I would still feel comfortable using my good skis. Classic tracks are there but inconsistent until we get some more snow. Thank you Jerry!
